Steelers mad about Chesney concert trash complaints

Last month, a Kenny Chesney concert at Heinz Field resulted in plenty of arrests, even more trash, and a flood of public attention to the problem.

Now, the Steelers are miffed about the decision of folks within the broader stadium/parking structure to talk publicly about the situation.

According to WTAE-TV, a Steelers sent a letter to Pittsburgh’s Stadium Authority, which owns the parking lots in the vicinity of Heinz Field, complaining about the things said in the aftermath of the event.

The Steelers contend that Merrill Stabile, the president of Alco Parking, “chose to publicly slander the fans at Heinz Field, which caused serious concerns for Mr. Chesney’s management.”   The Steelers also claim that the remarks “could hamper efforts to promote future concerts at Heinz Field.”

Stabile defended his comments in an email to WTAE.

“My philosophy in solving a problem is to first acknowledge that there IS one,” Stabile said.  “Therefore, I saw no benefit in stonewalling the media or denying that there was a problem.  I saw more benefit in being proactive and acknowledging that the volume of garbage was extremely high and that WE (Alco Parking) need to do better for future events of this nature.”

Stabile also said the letter from the Steelers represents a “feeble attempt” to blame him if Chesney decides not to return to Pittsburgh.

“If the Steeler organization is waiting for an apology from me, I can only characterize my sentiments with a title to an old country-western song, ‘If the phone don’t ring, it’s me,'” Stabile said.

Maybe Chesney can sing that one if he ever returns to Heinz Field.

  1. Stabile why don’t you do the job that the ticket buyers and taxpayers are paying you for? Clean and maintain the parking areas before during and after the show. This is the 6th year of Kenny Chesney playing HF and you treat in like a learning experience? Making comments about the fans sounds like an incompetent or jealous teenager.

  2. “If the Steeler organization is waiting for an apology from me, I can only characterize my sentiments with a title to an old country-western song, ‘If the phone don’t ring, it’s me,’” Stabile said.

I don’t know this guy, but I already like him. lol!

  3. Wait, the steelers don’t even own the lots, why do they get a say? Second, what is wrong with these tailgaters? How disrespectful!

  4. Or, Here’s a Idea, Why don’t Kenny Chesney fans quit being slobs, The blame is with them and no one else, “Hey, lazy Kenny Chesney fans, pick up your crap.”

  5. It’s funny that this and Ben’s holiday in London are the most newsworthy posts from this organization in the last couple weeks. Perhaps they should be worried about who is going to run the ball, catch it, or provide some sort of pass rush instead of piles of trash in their home field.

  6. its being totally blown out of proportion. trust me it was one guy upset with the parking authority and a couple herbs. listen those chesney fans are some of the best most loyal fans any where and are always welcome in our city for that concert. especially all the Beautiful ladies that follow. cant wait till the next one. and oh BTW pittsburgh rapper Mac Miller was in pgh last night at stage A.E and 16 people were takin to hospitals dhydrated and a little alcohol poisioning and kids smoked that reefert weed and got sick so its not just country music fans that have things going on in the Nor side

  7. I guess he thinks the Steelers and Chesney fans are pigs??

The Steelers could get make sure they don’t get that phone call, but cutting his parking lot feeds. That would cut down on the trash, Oh, and maybe some of his revenue. He’s really complaining about having to pay a couple more hours to minimum wage workers.

  8. Steelers fans will tell you it’s Mike Wallace’s fault……he drops everything!

  9. The fact is Chesney’s fans generated five times the trash that Steelers fans leave behind even though only 49,000 attended the show, while the Steelers — who sell out every game — draw about 66,000 fans, including a large tailgating contingent. My question to the Steelers organization would be “how is it Stabile publicly slandered the fans?” Stabile said it best – this represents a “feeble attempt” to blame him if Chesney decides not to return to Pittsburgh.

That was the point. There weren’t enough trash cans or workers to handle the volume. The fans had nowhere to dump anything.

  11. These crowds need controlling?? ………….start enforcing the ‘open container’ law that is on the books.
The lots smelled so bad of urine and beer you had to hold your nose walking through them. Women taking a piss between parked cars in the lots hardly makes them ladies.
    KC fans are pigs…………

  12. How can you tell if there is too much trash at Heinz Field. That’s like saying there’s too much water in the ocean.

  13. If hesney won’t come back, may I suggest Bieber as an alternative?

    Regards,
    Keyshawn Johnson & Eric Dickerson

  14. Just rich folks bickering. Why don’t they help by hiring some people off the street to help clean up? Problem solved.

  15. Ohhhh now here’s a surprise a bunch of Pittsburgh Steeler Rednecks trashing the place. More proof that winning the super bowl doesn’t buy you class. They should rename Heinz field the Toilet Bowl Stadium. It would be fitting to those redneck turds.

  16. New Orleans measures the “success” of Mardi Gras by the amount of trash picked up in the Vieux Carré on Ash Wednesday.

Sounds like a successful show. (I hesitate to call it a concert.)

    Who dafuq is kenny chesney?!

He’s a guy that makes more in one night than you do in a year.

  18. I’m a life-long, die-hard Steelers fan & will be until i die. Having said that, F@#$ The Rooneys. The moronic children that trashed the city are the problem, not the Stadium Authority for addressing the situation publicly. The Rooneys need to worry more about winning championships again & less about running the city.

  19. What do u expect? The place is a dump in the first place. What the Steelers are trying to do is called damage control. Trying to control the message ,but the problem is they can’t control the messenger. I applaud Mr Stabile for sticking up (same time sticking it too) for himself and his employees. It’s shameful that they are trying to pin it on him for being honest and exposing the trash that is called Heinz field.

I’ve not heard of him, but that means absolutely nothing.

  21. Wow, I thought Pittsburgh was bad, but this is just ridiculous. It’s like their parents never made them clean up after themselves as children. No class.

Here we go Steel Rings, here we go!
    +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Um, those aren’t rings, those are 6 garbage cans!

  23. I have been to Kenny Chesney events at Heinz Field. Things are left a mess. Walking out of Heinz Field at the end of the night, it looks like a tornado had gone through the parking lots for as far as a mile’s radius around the stadium. You have to look down while you’re walking so you don’t step in vomit or broken glass.

With any event comes excess trash and bodily fluids left by tailgaters. However, no other event compares to the third world state that Kenny Chesney concerts leave the area.

There are countless arrests every year, both inside and outside of the stadium. Public urination is commonplace around the lots where hoards of fans set up to tailgate. By the time late afternoon rolls around, most tailgaters are so drunk that they will not bother to use a trash can or dumpster, no matter how many are around.

17 6 Funny some one from Baltimore calling something a dump. When I close my eyes and think of a dump Baltimore is the first thing that comes to mind. The fans are next…I think you need to mind your own business Baltimore has plenty of problems to fix…sshh

  25. Given that the fans relieved themselves all over the field, maybe Tidy Bowl will replace Heinz as sponsor.

Every city has issues. But I’ve never heard of fans from any city other than Pittsburgh treating their own stadium like one giant toilet. I guess that’s why they give them towels because sanitation and personal hygiene are still a challenge. Another feather in the cap for Steeler Nation!
