The Detroit Lions and the Big Ten have announced a partnership to host a bowl game every year at Ford Field, beginning after next year’s college football season.

The game, which won’t be named until a sponsor is found, is expected to kick off for the first time on December 30, 2014, although it’s possible that a TV network will move the game to another day.

We are thrilled to be hosting a new bowl game in Detroit that will be anchored by an annual commitment from the Big Ten,” Lions President Tom Lewand said in a statement. “In addition to showcasing our city and its rich football tradition, this game will be an opportunity for fans to enjoy a postseason matchup featuring one of college football’s best conferences.”

Detroit isn’t exactly most people’s idea of a great place to spend a winter vacation, but the city has hosted bowl games for several years. The current Detroit bowl game, known as the Little Caesars Pizza Bowl, will likely cease to exist with the Lions’ bowl game pushing it out.
