One of the rites of training camp is learning which players recovering from injuries aren’t quite ready for a full workload yet.
For the Ravens, you can add linebacker Jameel McClain and guard Marshal Yanda. The team announced both players will be on the active PUP list to start camp, which means they cannot practice with the team until they’re activated. Once they do practice, they can’t go on the regular season PUP list although that hasn’t been discussed as an option for either player at this point.
McClain is recovering from a spinal cord contusion he suffered last December and did individual work during OTAs. He’s expected to join Arthur Brown and Daryl Jones as options at inside linebacker, where the Ravens lost Ray Lewis and Dannell Ellerbe this offseason.
Yanda is making his way back from shoulder surgery. Coach John Harbaugh said in June that he expected Yanda to be “back by camp to some degree.” Whatever degree it is falls short of 100 percent, although the right guard and No. 58 player on the PFT 100 is expected back at his post for the season.
The Ravens also placed defensive end Kapron Lewis-Moore on the non-football injury list. The sixth-round pick out of Notre Dame tore his ACL in the BCS title game and is seen as a long shot to do much for the team this season.
