Mike Shanahan: “It doesn’t make sense” to play RGIII in preseason

There won’t be any commemorative t-shirts for Robert Griffin III preseason games this year.

Griffin said this week that he didn’t think he’d be playing in any preseason games this summer unless coach Mike Shanahan said so and Shanahan doesn’t sound like a man who is planning to say so. Shanahan met the media on Thursday and said that he didn’t need to see Griffin play in the preseason.

“It just doesn’t make sense to play him in the preseason,” Shanahan said, via the team. “It does take some times to get back in football shape.”

The only way anybody is going to be able to see how Griffin looks on a football field before the season opener against the Eagles on September 9 will have to go to a Redskins practice to find out as the Redskins have decided the risk of a setback in a meaningless game isn’t worth any potential rewards. It’s the decision everyone expected and there will likely be a lot of eyes tuned in come Week One to see Griffin play for the first time since the playoff loss to the Seahawks.

Shanahan also announced that the team has activated cornerback Josh Wilson from the PUP list after placing him on it Thursday morning. Defensive end Adam Carriker won’t be back any time soon, however. Shanahan said that he’s expected to miss four to five months after his latest leg surgery so we might not see him at all this year.
