The Patriots had guard Tyronne Green on their roster for a couple of weeks this offseason before releasing him, but it seems they saw enough during that brief stint to want to see a little more.

The team announced Thursday that they have re-signed Green, who visited with the Bills during his time away from New England. Rookie center Matt Stankiewitch was released to make room for Green on the roster.

Green was a fourth-round pick of the Chargers in 2009 and started 28 games for them over four seasons. Like most members of the San Diego line over the last few years, Green’s play was not particularly impressive and that helps explain why he was available for the Patriots to sign in May and again on Thursday.

The Patriots have starting guards Logan Mankins and Dan Connolly returning this season with Marcus Cannon either pushing Connolly or backing up at guard and tackle. If Green sticks around longer this time around, he’ll likely help flesh out the team’s depth on the interior of the line.
