Report: Vonta Leach expected to re-sign with Ravens

The Baltimore Ravens and fullback Vonta Leach appear to be headed toward a reunion.

According to Dave Hutchinson of the Newark Star Ledger, Leach will make a decision on which team he will play for this season on Friday and is learning toward heading back to Baltimore.

Leach was released by the Ravens in May in a cap-related move. He then met with a handful of teams in free agency including the New York Giants and Miami Dolphins but was unable to find a deal he deemed suitable.

The Giants and Ravens both had standing offers on the table to Leach. The deal with New York was reportedly a one-year deal for the veteran minimum. The Ravens have kept the deal they offered Leach before his release on the table. He was scheduled to make $3 million this season before being let go. The deal Baltimore tried to negotiate with Leach before his release was for $2 million with the ability to make the final $1 million back in incentives.

If those deals are still available to Leach, it seems pretty obvious why he’s leaning toward a return trip to Baltimore.

  1. Welcome home Big Dog. Told everyone with two ears you’d be back. Sorry half your salary was cut but we love ya fam.

  2. Maybe this would stop the endless comments about a “gap in leadership”. Tell that to Harbaugh, Flacco, Ngata, Suggs, Rice, Yanda, Ladarius… You don’t think thay playing alongside the greatest leader in modern NFL times, you don’t learn a thing or two? Leadership isn’t just a warm-up speech, it’s setting the right example for the people around you.

  3. Really happy to see Leach come back to Baltimore (if it comes to fruition).

Great for Ray Rice and Bernard Pierce, plus it allows 4th round rookie Kyle Juszczyk to learn from the best blocking FB in the game, which is huge.

  4. Great!- If this is true. Leach is a pro who loves to hit people. He is also a great teammate. In addition he carried the ball in the 4th quarter against New England in the championship game and helped consume a lot of clock. Ray Rice is happy!

  5. Welcome back to Baltimore, Vonta! We’re waiting for you with open arms. We know you’ve been “learning” towards us the whole time ;D

  6. If the report is true regarding comparative terms, the Ravens are slightly overpaying out of a sense of loyalty, and it’s easy to see why players love playing for that organization.

  7. Hmmm…league minimum or 2 mil maybe 3
what to do, what to do.

They left an offer on the table Mr. Leach so who’s gonna love ya more than Charm City?

  8. Miami will regret not signing Leach. Thomas doesn’t scare anybody and if Miller is the #1 back, he needs help blocking. I understand Bush was the main back last season, but if Miller is #1, not signing Leach will bite him in the ass!!

  9. Pretty shrewed move by Ozzie and the Ravens.
Letting ole Vonta test the market, and see what his true value is.
No sense in overpaying for a guy that only plays 50% of snaps.

  10. As a football fan I love Leach’s playing style and as a Ravens fan I’m excited to have this monster back. Ozzie knows the market value of players as good as anyone.

  11. I suppose he’ll be useful when we play him, but with us (deservedly) moving toward a more open offense with Caldwell, I’m not sure how much he’ll see the field. He was only on it for around 33% of snaps last year.

  12. Glad to have this guy back in the fold. Very underrated player for us – I hope we can utilize him more in the new system. Over the last few games with Caldwell, he was used in the passing game with surprising efficiency.

  13. Wow, 1,2,3 and 4, right down the line with the most hated teams in the NFL. What a huge mistake for Leach if he re signs with Baltimorgue.

  14. He’s a great fullback, great locker room guy and we miss him dearly here in Houston. But he got WAY too much money for a fullback that rarely carries the ball.

  15. Hope it’s true! He was a big reason for Ray Rice’s success last year, and the dude’s a tank. Fun to watch him bulldoze people like in the picture above.

  16. I love how the haters say we won’t compete this year. Younger, faster defense with a veteran additions will improve our play from last year. 2 burners on the outside, Pitta and Dickson working the middle, a versatile fullback, and lets not forget a punishing run game with Rice, Pierce, and Leach.

Talk all the trash you want like every year. Ravens will still be a playoff contender just like we are year in and year out.

    Go Ravens!

  17. “Let’s hope he comes back and knocks the Steelers DL flat on its back.”

He’d first have to make it through that big marshmellow jelly-roll of an offensive line you have. Besides, the Ravens will only take him if he’s 30 lbs overweight to keep their strategy consistent. Unless he’s been hanging out with McKinnie, Cody, Jones and Pierce, he’s probably not fat enough yet.

  18. Hey crown thats really funny. What was your record last year? Hey, just to let you know in case you just came out of your cave, the RAVENS ARE THE SB CHAMPS AGAIN!!

  19. Hey tao, as I’ve stated multiple times before, congratulations on your SB win, well-earned. Didn’t know that also meant all of the off-season moves are off-limits to criticism.

And that’s your comeback – “what was your record last year?” Yikes, just when I thought it couldn’t get any more dense in here, another one pops up.

  20. “He’d first have to make it through that big marshmellow jelly-roll of an offensive line you have.”

When does Steelers training camp begin? Conditioning tests aren’t until 4pm today? Hmmm…I guess there’s no rush when you plan on spending the entire season in the AFCN basement.

  21. Hi crown,

Please stop drawing attention to people who are overweight…err…big boned.

    Thanks buddy!
    Ben & Lamarr

    PS–Byron and Casey say hi!!

  22. Crown – just giving back a very little bit of what you give. All in good sportsmanship. Still think ours is by far the best rivalry on football and I don’t count out gentle Ben until the clock reads 0:00.

I will say though that what I saw as a recent pic of him reminded me of the pillsbury doughboy. Unless it was an old pic. So I’m not too sure is be calling out ravens for the fat farm. Although you did lose 3 players when you cut Casey Hampton.

  23. For starters, the steelers had no issues stopping your offense last year, and for all of your existence…you can thank jones fir your split last year. And second Ozzie had nothing to do with this, he went out and no team was willing to pay so he had no choice other then take the pay cut with the ravens. Lastly, Ravens will not repeat, I doubt they will even win the division.
