Dwyer drops 25-30 pounds in quest to be the best

Many assume that rookie Le’Veon Bell will become the new starting tailback in Pittsburgh.  The many doesn’t include running back Jonathan Dwyer.

Dwyer told 93.7 The Fan in Pittsburgh that he aims to win the job.

“I want to prove to people that I can be one of the best,” Dwyer said.

He first has to emerge as the best in Pittsburgh, and the Steelers wouldn’t have used a second-round pick on Bell if they didn’t believe he could win the job.

Still, Dwyer has stepped it up.  He also said Monday that he has lost 25-to-30 pounds by watching his diet and working hard.

“I worked out probably like 2-3 times a day, sometimes on Saturdays and Sundays, too,” Dwyer said.  “Running hills and [doing] all types of stuff.  Not just to lose weight, but to be in condition.”

He said he feels like he has more energy, and that he’s more explosive and quicker in camp.  And some of his teammates did a double take when they saw the new and improved Jonathan Dwyer.

“I just want to be the best,” Dwyer said.  “Last year, I got a taste of how to play. . . .  I don’t want to be just average, I want to be among the elite.”

Dwyer appeared in 13 games last season, with six starts.  He rushed for 623 yards on 156 carries.  If he gets his wish, those numbers will be a lot higher in 2013, and beyond.

  1. Hopefully he can put together another underwhelming season of less than 50 yards a game and less than 4 yards per carry. Wow.

  2. Dwyer was a slow power back that weighed about 230lbs. If he lost 25-30 lbs, he better have shaved .2 seconds off his 40 and developed moves overnight, because he’s certainly not going to be driving piles weighing 200-205lbs.

  3. The Steelers really have focused on both on- and off-field history when assessig players lately. Guys are working hard and saying the right thing these days. Nothing but positive vibes out of Pittsburgh right now.

  4. Where’s all the raven dirt bags to comment on a steelers post?
More of them comment on these articles than they do on one about their own team…if that’s what you would call it anyway

  5. This only works well if the O line gets crazy good and from I’ve seen in Latrobe… Nope not this year.

  6. Dats00d,

Word has it he was ~260 last season (at least steeler related radio shows have said that when referencing the weight he lost)…

Should put him around 225 or so. The only RBs that can survive at 200lbs are guys like chris johnson.

  7. To the extent this is even a story worthy of comment, here goes – If you go back and look at the history of Dwyer joining the Steelers, you learn that this guy had great speed plus power, but only when he stayed at his playing weight. He lit up his first camp, then sat on the bench and got heavy as a rookie. He only made matters worse over the next summer, and showed up at the following year’s camp legitimately fat. He was close to getting cut. He got the reputation as a lazy athlete. So, if in fact he has come into this camp in genuine condition, there is no reason he couldn’t hang on to his starting job. Talent was not really the issue with this guy – it was motivation. That said, even now I am not convinced, especially when he say he worked out “sometimes on Saturdays and Sundays, too,” like that is some kind of amazing thing. You’re a professional athlete fighting for his career, dude. I would be doing two-a-days seven days a week all summer if I were in those shoes.

Think you have it backwards buddy. Have yet to see one Raven fan post anything negative on this article, but if you go back to yesterday’s Leach article, or any Ravens article for that matter, you’ll see a good portion of the comments are bitter Steelers trolls. Truth is, why do Ravens fans care about Pitt? They don’t. The Ravens just won the SB while Pitt couldn’t even break .500 in 2012. Ravens continue on the upswing while Pitt seems stagnant. There used to be a ton of back and forth bashing, but now? Ravens fans realize its just not fun or fair to pick on the slow kid in class. And that is not trolling, it’s calling it like it is.

  9. Ratbird dirtbag here– Also, GT alum. I loved Dwyer when he was at Tech and I wish him the best in P’Burgh. However, Ratbirds will shut him down. (Our D will be vastly improved this year — you’ll see.)

  10. I don’t care who starts, or if they take turns, they need to find the running game. Steelers were 26th in rushing, ravens was 20th, steelers 14th in passing, ravens 15th. As long as sanders and the running game shows up this year the steelers will compete.

Wow, a ravens fan with the first post of the story. This is the definition of a troll. Ravens fans are so concerned about the Steelers they are constantly keeping up with Steelers news. It is always nice to know that the Steelers live rent free in your tiny little head 24/7. BTW…..it will be fun watching my postal working catching jump balls from your QB all year long. I am assuming that you will have to grab someone from the street to get someone to catch for you. Tough break on your TE. Cheers!

  12. Le’veon Bell is the man. Dwyer is a keeper tho and would love to keep him in the mix. The steelers running attack is going to vastly improve this year. Can’t wait to see these guys running over defenses.

Well you are keeping your string of never saying anything worth a damn. If what you say is true why are there so many raven trolls on every thread? The day you stop worrying about the steelers is when your team leaves town…again. Do us a favor live by what you preached above and we will be very happy, but your tiny ego needs to be fed so you won’t.

  14. I guess the weight loss is due to finally refusing all those lame offers for free meals and hotel rooms from second rate sous chefs in Florida.

  15. just wanted to give a shout out to nofool, jm, and crown for being good football fans in regards to hearing about the pitta injury. injuries are part of the game, but it still sucks to see it happen, even to a rival. now back to our regularly scheduled bickering

You do realize that you’re essentially calling out Ravens fans for the exact same thing that Steelers fans do too right? But maybe you’re right. Maybe I should call for every single Ravens fan on PFT to stop posting on Steelers articles, but answer this- will it stop the numbskulls like Crown and Stiller and McBeam from trolling on Ravens articles? No. And why is that? Because as much as you claim the Steelers are in our heads? We’re just as much in yours. If you could stop the bullheadedness and admit that we could all get along much better.

  17. Nofool is all over every Ravens story. And he doesn’t even talk about the Ravens. He just insults the poster, calling them “skippy” or “sonny” or whatever terms grouchy old battle axes use nowadays. That’s his whole schtick.

Here’s some advice – at least make sure the very first post isn’t what you say won’t happen. You’ll soud a little less foolish. Not much, but a little.

  19. For us to to get along both fan bases need to adhere to the same rules and that won’t happen. Good example is rockthered overlooking the first troll posting on this thread. You need to put yourself in the other guys shoes ……ain’t gonna happen. So just stop posting and we will be very happy and I ll stay on just the steeler threads.

I think what Nofool is trying to say is that he will remain quiet until someone posts something he doesn’t like about his beloved 8-8 Steelers, the AFCN’s 3rd place team. At that point, the old insult machine starts firing again on all cylinders.

You are wrong by saying you think ..you just hate and bash no thought or logic outside of hate hate hate. Very simple theme for a very simple mind. It gets you up in the morning and drives your shallow existence….if it makes you happy good for you,,I have so much more..

  22. Ravens fans are delusional. …News flash for 2014:

they lost every game ray lewis did not start last year
Your schedule sucks… likeyou could walk away 2-5 the first 7 games sucks…go look at it again and do the math.

They are starting two rokies in a complex defence. Brand new dfences take time to mesh… your defence will improve by game 8 or so… maybe

With not Pitta defences will put eight in the box and we see how important bolden was next year…

You all won one live it up. Because 2014 is going to suck for the ratbirds…

  23. That’s a lot of weight for any back to lose, especially a power back. They are usually more muscle than fat which makes me doubt he lost that much.Ten pounds maybe ,25-30 no way !.

  24. and…..the bickering is back

0 0 You should also add the snarking and raven trolling. But we steeler fans are accustomed to our little terrier friends from ratturd ville yapping it up on our threads seeking recognition and respect. Ssshhh big dogs only ……not there yet.
