The Patriots announced Monday night that first-year defensive lineman Armond Armstead is recovering from an infection that required surgery.

“Armond is in good condition and is expected to make a full recovery,” the club said in a statement. “A timetable has not been set for his return to football.”

The nature of the infection was not disclosed by the Patriots.

Armstead, who is reportedly on the Patriots’ non-football illness list, suffered a heart attack while at USC. However, head coach Bill Belichick indicated this weekend that Armstead’s absence was for another reason.

“I think it’s a different situation,” Belichick said, per the Boston Herald.

The Patriots signed the 22-year-old Armstead in February. He played for the Canadian Football League’s Toronto Argonauts in 2012.
