Dolphins to check out other WRs today

The Dolphins have been sit by injuries to their second-tier receivers already in camp, so they’re taking a look at a few more.

In addition to the previously reported scheduled visit with Laurent Robinson, the Dolphins are expected to have other wideouts work out today, according to Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald.

Former Colts wideout Austin Collie is said to be on the Dolphins radar. Like Robinson, he’s auditioned for several teams this offseason without finding a taker, as some are leery of his injury and concussion history.

“We’re always looking to improve, whether from within or without,” Dolphins coach Joe Philbin said when asked about the position.

After losing Armon Binns for the season and Rishard Matthews for a few weeks with injuries, the Dolphins are looking for depth. Their front line guys (Mike Wallace, Brian Hartline and Brandon Gibson) are still well, so it’s hardly a panic.

  1. This is the difference between making a run and rebuilding. In past years Ireland would have viewed Robinson and Collie as progress stoppers and would have elected to go with unproven youth.

  2. I’m no Dolphins fan. I don’t hate them either… This just sounds like due diligence. I guess.

I’d think they’re in pretty decent for WRs.

Mike Wallace – One trick pony. But the ability to blow past every DB in the NFL is a helluva trick.

Brian Hartline – He’s the steady-eddie, reliable, sneaky-fast receiver that every team wants to have. He’ll never make the Pro Bowl, but he’ll do all the little things coaches love.

Brandon Gibson – We’ll see. His years in St Louis were inconsistent at best. He’s shown some flashes.

Dustin Keller – You’ve got to include the pass catching TE when talking about the Dolphins receiving corp. He was the Jets best receiver last year, and arguably the last few years.

It makes sense for the Phins to bring in a couple guys, just to take a look… Like I said, due diligence.

“Coach Philbin, I’m still open. And out of the pokey” – ocoho stinko

“Oh, Ocho we’re not there just yet… However if Sharknado attacks Mike Wallace, we have your PO Box number …” – Coach Philbin

  4. The whole Mike Wallace one trick pony thing is getting old, anyone who watches football knows that’s not the case, so many of his yards came from slants and catches out of the back field and breaking open a big play. The one trick pony is a term from disgruntled steeler fans who know what he meant to their offense. Fact is that this crew is very talented and very young, we are talking about 4th and 5th string receivers who will only take about 10 snaps a game.
