Some second-quarter takeaways and observations from the Hall of Fame game between the Cowboys and Dolphins, which Dallas leads 17-3 at halftime:
-- The Dolphins elected to play second-string quarterback Matt Moore much longer than counterpart Kyle Orton. It will be interesting to see what Moore’s reps are in the games to come. Moore, like Dallas’ Orton, is a good backup, and Miami needs to get him ready while protecting him, too.
-- Good: Dolphins undrafted rookie wide receiver Chad Bumphis showed nice quickness on a 45-yard catch-and-run when Miami beat a Dallas blitz. Bad: Bumphis later dropped a third-down throw that landed in the hands of Cowboys rookie linebacker DeVonte Holloman, who took it back for a touchdown. The pass was a little to the left of Bumphis, but it’s a catch he needs to make.
-- Don’t be surprised if the loser of the Dan Carpenter-Caleb Sturgis PK competition in Miami lands a job elsewhere this season. Carpenter has had some good seasons, while Sturgis was a well-regarded 2013 draft prospect. Carpenter got the first field-goal attempt in this game, converting a 27-yarder.
-- Cowboys reserve RB Phillip Tanner showed well in his preseason debut, racking up 59 yards on 10 carries. Moreover, Tanner reportedly played through an arm injury. Tanner, Lance Dunbar and rookie Joseph Randle are the top reserve options behind starter DeMarco Murray, who isn’t playing tonight. Dunbar was the first back to play, followed by Tanner, then Randle.
-- Cowboys rookie QB Nick Stephens made a strong throw to Anthony Armstrong early in the second quarter, sticking the ball between two Miami defenders for an 18-yard gain.
-- Dolphins rookie DE Dion Jordan feigned lining up at tackle on a third-down play, then dropped into coverage and tripped up Randle on a draw play. It was an interesting sequence.
-- Injuries: Cowboys safety Matt Johnson (left ankle) was hurt after the long Moore-to-Bumphis pass play. Per NBC’s Michelle Tafoya, the club expects Johnson to return. A 2012 fourth-round pick, Johnson missed his rookie season because of hamstring injuries.
