No date set for RGIII’s return to 11-on-11 work

Robert Griffin III was dressed in a full uniform for Thursday night’s game against the Titans, but, as everyone who has been paying attention to his recovery from knee surgery was already well aware, he didn’t play in the game.

Griffin isn’t likely to play at all in the preseason, which means that the only 11-on-11 work he’ll see before the first weekend of the regular season will come during practice. Redskins coach Mike Shanahan said recently that Griffin would move from being limited to 7-on-7 drills to the next phase of practice after the game with the Titans was out of the way.

After the game, though, Shanahan said that no date has been set for Griffin to graduate to a heavier workload and Mike Jones of the Washington Post reports that the quarterback is likely to remain on his current schedule for at least Saturday’s practice. Griffin’s sartorial choice was one sign that he’s raring to move on to the next step, as was his decision to go through pregame warmups before moving to the bench.

“He worked out beforehand, about half hour before the game, and I said to him, ‘If you’d like to go through pregame warmups, you’re welcome to,’ as I said to a number of our players,” Shanahan said. “A number of our players had gotten a full workout earlier, and everyone had a right to. Robert wanted to get more of a workout. Robert wanted to get some more work in. It was good to see him out there.”

Shanahan has vowed to stick to the team’s plan for Griffin even if the quarterback is frustrated by the pace. There’s no sign of wavering, although it seems likely that we’ll be hearing about Griffin in 11-on-11 drills sooner rather than later.
