Da’Quan Bowers admits he needs to be in better shape

We’ve heard Buccaneers coach Greg Schiano share his thoughts on defensive end Da’Quan Bowers more than once in recent months.

Schiano hasn’t been shy about going public with his need to be convinced that Bowers has what it takes to be a three-down player at the NFL level, especially when it comes to his ability to play every down with the same effort and intensity levels. Bowers hasn’t heard anything different from Schiano in private and admits that his conditioning isn’t where it needs to be for a player being counted on to play a major role up front.

“I think I’m still a little winded at times,” Bowers said, via Stephen Holder of the Tampa Bay Times. “I’m still not in the best shape. I’m still getting used to the speed of practice. But other than that, [training camp] has been decent.”

It’s an honest assessment by Bowers that suggests a willingness to do the work asked of him by the Buccaneers. The Bucs are doing their part to get Bowers ready for what’s ahead of him this season as well. Bowers saw more time than the typical starter in the first preseason game, which he said he needed, and he figures to see even more work during the rest of preseason in an effort to get him in the proper condition.

  1. Good idea… Let’s give a highly injury prone player a lot of playing time in preseason games… I am sooo positive that this will go well… Bowers will be on IR within 2 weeks…

  2. This guy has little INTENT to be a great, let alone good, professional football player. His will is weak and his energetics reflect that.

  3. Coaching & trainer problem. They should have known this months ago and started to correct it.

The season is only a couple of weeks away.

Amazed a coach like Schiano allowed this to happen.

  4. Hard to tell why he was once considered a top 3 pick in the draft.. besides his injury, there has to ne more to why he fell so far in the draft, & I think we’re all finding out. Me as a fan hate hearing about these kids having so much potential coming out of college but never amount to anything.. If I hate it I can imagine how coaches feel!!

  5. A top 3 draft pick? I remember talk of this guy being the number one pick. He hasn’t worked out well (pun intended) for the Bucs.

  6. Cheapglazers lol!

Bowers did not look good at the practice I went to or in the preaseason game against 2nd and 3rd stringers. He does not look like a starting DE. He looks more like a goalline package 5 or 7 technique. He has lost that explosion to his first step, he looks like he lead in his shoes. He anchors well against the run but has no quickness off the ball. I’m hoping that it’s just conditioning and the stress he’s been under from the gun charge. One thing to mention though is Demar Dotson has absolutely dominated him all preseason and the world is about to know who he is. If Bowers doesn’t make any splash plays this game then there is reason for concern at OneBucPlace.
