Demarcus Dobbs will miss the 49ers’ season opener against the Packers.

The 49ers announced today that Dobbs, the third-year player who has played both tight end and defensive end, has been handed a one-game suspension by the NFL for violating the league’s policy on substance abuse.

“The San Francisco 49ers organization supports the NFL’s code of conduct policy and their recent decision regarding Demarcus,” 49ers General Manager Trent Baalke said in a statement.

Dobbs, who is currently listed as a second-string defensive end on the 49ers’ depth chart, was arrested for marijuana possession and suspicion of DUI last year.

  1. Another day and another exposed cheater. I like Pete Rose’s system of just kick these guys out of the league. Then none of them will do it except the ones that don’t deserve to get paid big money to play what would be man’s game if it wasn’t such a manchild’s game the way the NFL has envisioned and created.

  2. Sorry meant to say “loser” since this is the recreational type of drug and not performance enhancing presumably. Either way you break the rules, then you shouldn’t play until you receive a significant punishment of real deterrence to repeat the mistake.

  3. Not proclaiming innocence or challenging the suspension on technicality are positive 1st steps.

  4. The NFL needs to ditch its marijuana policy. Either that or have a similar policy for consumption of alcohol.

Alcohol is associated with players getting into violent incidents like bar fights and shootings.

Marijuana is associated with players failing to make weight because of consuming too much raw cookie dough, ice cream and pizza.

  5. For a young guy trying to earn a role in reserve, not smart. Also glad no one got hurt if he was driving while impaired. Hopefully last year’s lesson was learned and not ignored.

  6. Oh geez, if you kick out all of the players in the NFL who have gotten a DUI it would be a sorry league indeed. And smoking pot is well on its way to becoming legal, so who cares about that infraction. If you can smoke it and still be a top athlete, more power to you!

  7. I don’t understand why he gets a one game suspension. Trent Williams and Fred Davis got suspended four games the first time they were suspended.

  8. This guy is a 3rd string trying to make a team’s 53, smoked pot, got caught and gets a 1 game suspension, Is this news worthy? He likely won’t make the team this year anyway with Dahl, Carridine, Dorsey, Lemon-yay and Ian Williams in front of him. He’s last year’s news.
