Colts trading Delone Carter to Ravens

AP

‘Tis the season to exchange your spare parts that you were going to cut anyway, if you can get anything of value.

According to Mike Chappell of the Indianapolis Star, the Colts are trading running back Delone Carter to the Ravens.

Carter wasn’t going to get many touches after the Colts obtained Ahmad Bradshaw, anyway, so a change in scenery can’t hurt. He started three games for the Colts in 2011, but only got 32 rushing attempts last year.

The Colts announced moments later the swap was for Ravens wide receiver David Reed, who showed some flashes as a return man, but has caught five passes in three NFL seasons.

  1. From the Ravens standpoint this makes no sense. You have Rice and Pierce as your 1-2. Then Rainey and Allen and some other camp bodies. Rainey is going to make the roster without a doubt so why trade a WR where you are thin for a 4th or 5th string RB, where your cup runeth over?

  2. Soooo can the Ravens rescind the trade if they give him a physical and deem him not healthy, and then cut him once they get him back? Save some money on the cap? There has to be SOME genius in this crazy move somewhere!!

  3. Carter for Reed…Any day, in any way!
PS- Hey Reed don’t forget the STICKUM…UHHHOHHH!

  4. Man,, the Raven’s just fleeced the Ravens ! ! !

This reminds me of the NOTHING move last week with 49ers/KC.

    washed up for washed out

  5. wow interesting. The Ravens were a bit overburdened with unproven WRs so it makes sense in that way but I’m not sure what they wanted out of Delone Carter, whether Spec teams or just RB depth

u might want to hold that thought, carter isnt that good, has bad case of fumblitis and doesnt run hard as his size would indicate

  7. David Reed a legend in his own mind.. you should listen to some of his soundbites on 105.7 The Fan.. smh.

  8. the OZ will still make 1 more GOOD move to improve the team..always does this time of year..

  9. This is for the Pierce injury….Something aint right…He is protecting the franchise in the event Pierce misses extended time…..Im not a Ravens fan and can see that…..

  10. 2 year contract for Reed off the Ravens salary cap possibly? Lots of Jim Caldwell peeps popping up on the team lately!

I doubt very seriously that the Ravens are planning to stand pat at WR. Plus, Reed can’t hold on to the ball. Low risk trade that probably won’t do much for anyone.

  12. as a colts fan, i liked the way delone played as a rookie. never understood why he got benched and forgotten about. i guess this makes sense from the pov that caldwell drafted carter, pagano knows reed. neither of these dudes will make an impact in their destination, but definitely weren’t making one for their old teams either.

  13. Didn’t see this coming. Carter was a decent back (especially considering the minimum number of carries he got). I understand Bradshaw is now in the mix…but the dude is still hurt/nursing injuries. I fully expected them to waive Donald Brown. But did not see them trading Delone. And for a return specialist no less!

  14. LOLing at Ravens fans giving props to this “Genius” move by Ozzie. Colts were gonna cut the dude anyway. Even Caldwell benched him after 1 game because he can’t hang on to the ball.

  15. Caldwell drafted Carter when he was with Indy. Pagano knows Reed from his days in Bmore. Despite fan passions, Raven and Colt organizations are probably on good terms now.

This swap may allow each team to fill a potential need in exchange for a player at a crowded position they might otherwise be cutting. Also Ravens may be saving some cap $$ in case they have to cut the player anyway. Or it could be a prelude to another move (like trading other now-extra RBs for a WR instead of cutting them); if so, classic Ozzie.

It’s a small move, but the cumulative effect of small moves frequently helps create separation on the field over course of the season.

  16. This is a wash a player the Colts were going to cut for a player the Ravens were going to cut… sounds like they both love to fumble too…. so there you go

  17. Just clearing cap space for when Ozzie makes a trade for Larry Fitzgerald…..
    ++++++++++++++++++

I love the sound of that idea….

  18. Here’s the reason;

They resigned Reed to a 2.5 million contract over 2 years, if they cut him he’d cost 2.5 against the cap this and next year. So by trading him they release him and don’t worry about the cap hit.

That 2.5 btw was what a guy like Canty, Spears, or Dumervil is costing right now against the cap.

    In Ozzie we trust.

  19. David Reed was a bubble player who hasn’t been getting many snaps since Stokley arrived. Makes me wonder if Ozzie made this trade to keep the Steelers from getting Carter since their rookie runningback out 6-8 weeks? We are pretty deep at runningback so it is a head scratcher. Also trading Reed frees up more cap space so good move on our end.

  21. Brilliant!

Similar to the NBA version of sign-then-trade, Ozzie trades Reed for a bag of flags so you can cut him with little effect on your cap. Reed was over a million in dead cap money when they cut him. Now the million+ will be used to sign a veteran WR that gets cut in the next week and a half.

    Wizard of Oz….

  22. Ravens take a 500k cap hit for the full amount of his signing bonus. Colts take 212k hit based on the remaining two years of unamortized signing bonus on Carter’s rookie deal.

  23. If Ozzie was a broker, he would be a billionaire. This guy knows where to find talent and continues to outsmart the competition. That’s why he runs a world championship organization and the rest of you are…well…the competition.

haha. who are you kidding? you quoted language from my post i.e., “genius”.

    Good try.

  25. I also find it instructive that the Ravens grabbed Carter when the Steelers are begging for help in the RB position. Steelers have plenty of non-performers they could try and unload (Roethlisbooger, Polamalu, Woodley…I could go on and on) for someone like Carter, and yet they waste time dragging Bell from doctor to doctor with the faint hope that some quack will clear him to go out there and become permanently disabled. If you look at the Jameel McClain situation, it’s obvious that Harbaugh won’t put his players in harm’s way just to keep a bunch of high strung fans from yapping and talking crap about their team and coach.

delone carter will be a probowler with the ravens at some point

we dont make mistakes & thats why we’re world CHAMPIONSSSSS[/b]

lol you do know that if carter is in the running for a pro bowl spot, that means ray rice is out of the picture. you want carter over rice? good luck with that.

  27. Excited to see if Jimmy Smith will guard Steve Smith….Not. They can’t expose him again this week.

    Rolando McLain’s posse agrees.

  29. After tonight everyone’s focus will be back where it should be, on the Ravens offensive and defensive struggles.

Some people have gotten off track…

Yeah, talking about the Steelers offensive and defensive struggles. Meanwhile we’re being told the Bengals are the new NFL darling which the Steelers will have to face on Monday in Week 2 I believe. Uh oh.

What happens when we win that game? No one is scared of the Bungles.

We dont want you to be scared….You all were not scared when we beat you last year and sent you home without a playoff spot….How is Leveon doing??? No Excuses!

I was thinking Calvin Johnson, but I’ll take Larry!

Larry Johnson? He is probably a better option than Delone Carter.

  34. You’d be better off with Willis McGahee than Larry Johnson. Johnson has a bad reputation as a team wrecker. Former NFL player Larry Johnson was arrested in Las Vegas last Friday for allegedly assaulting and strangling an ex-girlfriend until she blacked out. Now the running back is facing charges of felony domestic violence, according to TMZ. The Ravens don’t need that type of player. Both players have lost a few steps.

  35. Just in case the passing game fizzles, we need to be able to run the ball and wear the Defensive line down.Carter fits the bill for that role. Where is Leron McClain when you need him?
