Lions wide receiver Calvin Johnson will not play in Thursday’s exhibition vs. New England, the club said before the game.

Johnson has been dealing with a knee bruise. According to Josina Anderson of ESPN, Johnson indicated he had some knee pain before the game. Johnson did go through some pregame warmups, Anderson reported.

The 27-year-old Johnson caught 122 passes for 1,964 yards and five touchdowns in 2012. His production — and the attention opposing defenses must give him — are vitally important to the Detroit offense. With 17 days until the regular-season opener vs. Minnesota, a little more rest for the Lions’ star receiver isn’t the worst thing.

The Lions will have the services of safety Louis Delmas vs. New England, the club said before Thursday’s game. Delmas has been bothered by persistent knee issues in recent seasons.
