Mike Shanahan: Anything short of the Super Bowl is a failure

AP

Mike Shanahan says the expectations are very high this season in Washington.

According to Shanahan, his players believe that they have what it takes to win the Super Bowl, and they won’t settle for anything less.

“We have a team that you’re going to be proud of,” Shanahan said. “They have set the expectations: anything short of a Super Bowl is a failure.”

Shanahan said owner Dan Snyder has given his team all of the resources it needs, and that the personnel department has built a team good enough to win it all.

“Coaches coach, players play and together all of us can win championships,” Shanahan said, “and that’s what we plan to do.”

  1. It’s good to have high expectations. Nobody wants to root for a team with mediocre expectations. Having said that, I think you’ve set yourselves up for failure. You just don’t have the horses to get past the 49ers or the Seahawks or the Falcons. But best of luck to you! I hope you do well.

  2. hahaha..relax shanahan, how about get to .500 consistently year in year out. One winning season and hes ready to crown himself haha.Whats with all these NFC east(wac in college) division posts anyways..it should be NFC has beens..

  3. Looks like this season is adding up to be a failure, then.

Zero chance that team goes deep in the playoffs. Too many good teams to get through.

  4. “Coaches coach, players play and together all of us can win championships,”

Is he referring to SEC Championships or National Championships?

  5. well I think we all can assure you will be a failure then this year…..SB…..please. team has so many holes and cant compete with the big boys……

    FAIL!!!!

  6. That’s ridiculous Shanny…..you’ve got a porcelain doll for a QB, a Superbowl is not in your immediate future. Every team in the NFL wants to win the Superbowl, but not doing so is not failure. Drama queens are we – Redskins.

  7. 31 other teams have that same goal….start by winning your division……would it surprise anybody to see the 6-10 miss the playoffs…

  8. Mike too Tanahan is already claiming that the season is a failure! Going to be hard to win a SB with RG3JR as your starting QB.

  9. Shanahan said owner Dan Snyder has given his team all of the resources it needs, and that the personnel department has built a team good enough to win it all.
Now all they need is grass to play on so rg3 doesn’t kill himself again

  10. Well Shanny, be prepared for this season to be a failure then. And next year, and the year after, and after,…….
Just think, you drank the media KoolAid, fell for the overhype, and wasted valueable draft picks to trade up and grab the FraudIII.
You could have taken the drafts best QB later and had yourself a true leader, franchise QB, and enjoyed mjltiple future Super Bowls with Mr. Russell Wilson.
Redskins are now stuck with a 1 and done overrated FRAUD at QB while Seattle will be dominating the next decade and enjoying multiple titles with the games best QB.
Redskins will still be considered a failure each year while ghe fanbase and logicalvoices start wishing Shanny chose Russel Wilson instead

  11. Yeah, the Panthers were saying the same thing a couple of years ago and look how that ended up. Snyder must have Shanahan on the hot seat, and rightfully so.

  12. Go Redskins, dont pay any of these haters any mind, especially the ones that think Tony Romo and co.Will win the division, what a laugh,Go Redskins!!!!!

  13. Someone needs to remind Rat Face that is how all 32 teams are measured. There are 31 failures each year, genius.

  14. …because championship or “bust” predictions have done our Nation’s Capital so well in recent years. C’mon Shanny! #HTTR!

  15. Jim Haslett sucks and I’m a huge Redskin fan. Till you do something about his “blitz everybody on 4th and 23 and let Dez Bryant get a first down in one on one coverage”, we will be just making the playoffs.

  16. Yea Right this is Grade A Oscar Meyer Bologna! #LogicalVoice&RedskinFans are gonna be Mighty Disappointed on how there Pistol/Read Option won’t work cause the League’s Caught On!

  17. Tommorows front page headline:

Shanahan suspended by the league, tests positive for mushrooms, pcp, acid, and is diagnosed with chronic cluelessness

  18. Shanny should stop hanging around Bronco players. That stuff is messing up your minds

  19. “They have set the expectations: anything short of a Super Bowl is a failure.”

Be prepared for an epic FAIL. A team with no talent at QB rarely wins the SuperBowl. And I don’t think the paper thin defense can carry the unproductive offense. R-Words fans are used to failure and will accept it.

  20. I think Shanahan been hanging out with Fred Davis and Trent Williams a little to much. Put the drugs Down!!

  21. Every team should go into a season thinking they are going to win it all. The redskins are not going to however.
    Ravens will though.

  22. Yea so does every other player on every other team….some teams actually have real QBs with healthy knees Good luck with that. Go Vikes

  23. Well then it looks like you are destined to be a failure this year. You failed the redskins fan base last season by getting RG3 ripped apart in a playoff game. I’m glad this clown is not my coach.

  24. The bar is set but it isn’t anything any of the good teams don’t say every year. It’s kind of a non story.

I did like the proud part. Shanahan knows how to run a team.

I’m going to the opening Monday night vs eagles and am siked!

  25. considering we have to hear a story about RGIII every day while he’s been rehabbing it’s kinda obvious.

  26. Someone forgot his “reality” pills today.

I’d love for him to explain how the Redskins are better than the 49ers, Seahawks, Falcons, and Packers.

  27. At the time of the 2012 draft, I thought Luck would be the much better player and the Redskins mortgaged way to much to acquire RG3. But IMO RG3 has shown this attribute that very few players have, I guess they call it the “it” factor or whatever.. I wouldn’t be the surprised at all if this kid takes the Redskins to the promised land.

-Fan of some obscure AFC team

  28. Ok! You heard it here first. Shanahan is gunning for the superbowl and so is Rex Ryan. Superbowl is going to be Jets vs .Redskins in NY… now if you’ll excuse me it’s time to re-up on my crazy pills.

  29. The only way Redskins and Super Bowl can be mentioned in the same paragraph is if you were listing all past winners

  30. I agree with him….the Skins will be tough this year. But like a horse race….a thousand ways to lose it and only one way to win.

  31. As a Washington fan, this is one of the many reasons I hate Shanahan (and Snyder…and the front office…and the name Redskins…and I really a fan, anymore? IDK). Super Bowl or bust after our star QB is coming off of ACL surgery, huh? The arrogance of this guy. SMH.

  32. ROTFL. Redskins have one good year and now they’re talking Super Bowl or Bust. They better try to win week one first. Shanahan is overrated. Rex Ryan could’ve won Super Bowl XXXII if he had Elway & T. Davis. ‘Skins, their ugly uniforms, their overrated coach, stupid Hail to the Redskins song and their fragile QB better get used to Failure then. They will not even make the playoffs with Giants or Eagles winning the division.

  33. Yeah. Good luck on that without Miller or Bailey for the first several games. The Broncos are one neck injury away from being basement dwellers. They’re very lucky they play in such a week division.

  34. Nothing wrong with what he said. If you aren’t playing to win it all then don’t play at all. Most of you aren’t fans of teams with a winning tradition, so the dumb comments above are understandable.

  35. To quote the famous Stan Gable, “we’ll see you in about, uh, 20 years”. Prepare to fail, nerd.

  36. waitingguilty says:

    HTTR!

    Brilliant!

  37. It looks like Shana-rat is trying to give Jerry Jones competition for being the biggest lunatic in the NFC East.

The fact of the matter is that Shan-rat has never sniffed a Super Bowl appearance without a HOFer as his QB.

  38. If Rex Grossman can lead the Bears to one I guess it’s possible that he can lead the Skins there too.

  39. This just in, EVERY team strives to win the Super Bowl every year.

    There’s only 1 winner and 31 losers.

No one remembers regular season winners, no one.

  40. Those who judge the Redskins of 2013 by the teams for the early 2000’s are fools. This team is radically different in makeup and coaching. Offensively they are innovative and adaptable. Defensively they are now well-suited to their personnel and will start the year with most personnel healthy and will get their druggies back for the fifth game. And unlike any of the teams since Synder took over (including Gibbs 2.0), this team is deep in running back and finally has wide receivers that can do damage. The question mark is whether the China Doll will continue to be a running back who thinks he can throw or if he will grow up and man up and finally develop into a leader that he never was in college and never has been as a pro.

Judging this team by the teams in their division, they can definitely hold their own now and are better coached than the Cowboys and Iggles and have more talent than the Giants.

  41. shanahan is one of the best in the game, and the redskins will go deep into the playoffs. httr!

  42. I think it’s great the HC in DC has some confidence after last year’s improvement – but .. The NFC East is now the weakest division in football. And RG3 can’t play defense. Or special teams. Or run the ball without being hospitalized.

  43. Hey, why not?

They’re better than the last two Super Bowl Champions, which they have proved by beating them both.

Repeatedly with regards to the Giants.

  44. I wanna rip on the guy, but reality tells me that this time of year EVERY team sets that goal.

I think it adds a bit too much on the shoulders of RG3 also, especially at his young age and already working his butt off to come back from that injury.

  45. Looking at the comments here coaches should set the bar at “oh well let’s back into the playoffs and lose in round one” if they are not the Patriots, Broncos, or 49ers.

  46. I think Shanahan should be more focused on achieving a winning record first and then making making the playoffs. That should be his team’s number one goal. Big expectations always lead to big disappointments. Just ask Tim Tebow.

  47. Comment section is utterly ridiculous. Every team says the exact same thing right now. Whether it be the raiders, jaguars, redskins, or the 49ers. No coach or player aims to just be 8-8 and be mediocre

And laugh out loud at the eagles, with Michael Vick and chip Kelly leading the way, winning the division

  48. Skins fans have long been noted for immediately forecasting SB wins from offseason moves and preseason wins. It’s legendary in DC how they always win the Offseason.

But I can’t fault players for being optimistic.

  49. How about winning the division 1rst. That should be tough enough, esp with that D and RG3 coming off a knee injury.

  50. Last year wasnt a fluke. Shanahan had a 5 year plan to turn the Redskins into a Championship contender. This is year 4. They’re right on schedule…a little ahead of schedule actually.

  51. If you don’t believe that the Redskins have a chance to win the Superbowl this year, then you don’t keep up with football very well. Not saying they are favored, but once the playoffs start, if there healthy, look out. That’s a fact…JACK!

  52. When I saw the headline I thought “Denver is going Super Bowl or bust, this makes sense” and I clicked on the article and remembered Shanny coaches the Skins now. Lol.

well I think we all can assure you will be a failure then this year…..SB…..please. team has so many holes and cant compete with the big boys……
    ———————————————————-
Can’t compete with the big boys? We beat last years super bowl champs, we were on are way to beating the Seahawks in the playoffs till Griffin goes down. We lost a close one to Atlanta without 4 main starters last year. And we will see this year how we matchup against San Fran. I think we are one of the “big boys”. Don’t know who you root for, but I promise you will be scared if you play this team in the playoffs…HTTR

  54. Really? Eagles? Do you even WATCH football? So much fear…so much jealousy. See you back here in January and if you’re man enough you can apologize then.

  55. On one hand you can’t knock a coach for saying that and putting pressure on himself. As a fan of a rival team and one who understands there are at least 4 teams better then the Skins in the conference I believe Skeletor Man will crash and burn.

  56. I personally think Shanahan is overrated as a head coach. He won two SuperBowls with the Broncos but had John Elway as his QB. Since then, Shanahan hasn’t come close to winning one. I’ve always been a Redskins fan and would like to see them make it to the big dance, but I just don’t see it with their current roster.

  57. Seattle Seahawks lol. They looked like a JV squad against RG3. Keep on squawking losers.

    SEA…SF…ATL…GB…are all better than you.
    ________

And MAYBE one of those teams will make the super bowl. Those teams looked good last year and good on paper. Wait till the season starts before you start chalking up who is better then who.

Really? Eagles? Do you even WATCH football? So much fear…so much jealousy. See you back here in January and if you’re man enough you can apologize then.

Yeah, I do watch football. We have a superior QB, coach, RB’s, WR’s, TE’s, offensive line.. Our biggest question mark is the defense. Defense will be fine just need more time to gel together. You skins fans have no room to talk about “really? Eagles?” yeah the same team with the same QB that torched you and gave redskins fans nightmares. The football god a.k.a Chip Kelly will spank you AGAIN come 1st season game and I can’t wait!

  60. All I have to say is, “I’m glad that Shanahan is coaching this team and not the losers making all these snarky comments.

What is your goal this year coach?

“Um, we just want to go 8-8 this year, and then next year, 9-7. The other teams are just too good for us.”

You are right, guys, that sounds a lot better.

Maybe there’s a reason why he’s an NFL coach and you are typing snarky comments from your basement.

  61. Everybody calm down it’s still preseason. With that said we have improved our team and It looks really good that we can make another playoff run. NOBODY WANTS TO PLAY A HEALTHY RGIII IN THE PLAYOFFS!!!!! httr!!!!

  62. This WASHINGTON REDSKINS TEAM WILL NOT ONLY DOMINATED BUT WILL BE 19-0. !!!!!!!!!!”

  63. I love all these seahawks here. If RG3 is healthy last year, you would be 1 and done. A QB with 1 leg just about took you out. This year is different, and you would be best to tone your silly rhetoric down. Healthy RG3 , Healthy Orakpo, Healthy Garcon….don’t underestimate what Shanny is saying. Those that say RG3 will not make it through the season………just saying one thing……you better hope he doesn’t. HTTR

  64. Seriously?? You better keep that thin, undersized, frail young quarterback with the very fragile knee upright and in the pocket.!! If you have him run the pistol, you may be 8-8.

  65. his players believe that they have what it takes to win the Super Bowl, and they won’t settle for anything less. Mike Shanahan never guaranteed anything. People need to learn to read between the lines.

  66. When you KNOW you are finishing 4th in your own division, and you say something even close to this, you are asking to be fired.

Can’t blame Shanny, he is rolling with easily the worst QB in the league as his starter, meanwhile, his backup would start on over 15 teams in the league.

“Sorry RGIII: Shanny Can’t Coach Stupid”*

*copyright 2013: any t-shirt with this phrase violates my copyright and owes me all the money earned, before gross. I came up with it and so I gets ALL the monies! I’ll sue everone, I have lots of money.

  67. The game has passed this arrogant little man by. Shanahan would stab his family to win a title with the Skins. He will ruin this player if it is left to his myopic, egomaniacal whims.

  68. “Shanahan said owner Dan Snyder has given his team all of the resources it needs…”

Blown knees would disagree. Replace FedEx Field turf, then you may be on to something Michael.

This just in, EVERY person on this board remembers the Patriots won 16 regular season games, every one.

    Except maybe joetoronto…

  70. I would be a little disappointed if there were not 32 head coaches with this same mentality. He might as well said just win baby!!! 😉

  71. Good attitude to have but reality is that the Redskins hopes all bank on a running QB who was injured in college, and already injured in his first year in the NFL. I don’t see anything that makes me think that as soon as RGIII gets trotted out there that it won’t happen again. Especially with Shanahan who is famous for grinding talented players into dust (Terrell Davis exhibit A).

You make a good point, but at the same time, for every team, every season, even those in rebuilding mode, the goal is to win the Super Bowl. And every year, 31 of those teams will fail.

Statements like this are bold, but Shanahan is not setting himself up for failure any more than any NFL franchise that puts a team on the field each Sunday.

  73. This isn’t news every coach in the NFL thinks this, Also Eagles and Seahawks fans you can’t talk until you have won a SB.

  74. Give the guy a break…. Skins have just as good a chance as anyone this year…. Yes there a few good teams in the NFC … Skins do have a tough schedule this year but if they do make playoffs they have legit chance just like everyone else…. All these fraud fans just posting a bunch of bs …. Lol funny actually nothing wrong with feeling good about this team with plenty of depth …. They have a shot …. I’m a skins fan ill say it …. Should be fun year …. We shall see when the lights go on in 2 weeks ….
