Two first-quarter picks for Geno Smith

Geno Smith is not making the most of his opportunity to win the Jets’ quarterback competition.

Smith, who is starting for the first time this preseason on Saturday night against the Giants, threw two first-quarter interceptions. On the first interception, Smith threw behind receiver Ryan Spadola, and although Spadola grabbed for it, Giants cornerback Prince Amukamara took it away. On Smith’s second interception, he made a bad decision to throw into double coverage over the middle, and his pass sailed well over the head of the intended receiver Kellen Winslow and into the hands of Giants safety Stevie Brown. (Brown appeared to suffer a knee injury on the return and had to be helped off the field.)

Although the Jets seem to want Smith to win the quarterback competition, Smith has missed time with an ankle injury and hasn’t played particularly well when he did take the field in the preseason.

Time is running out on the Jets’ quarterback race, and Mark Sanchez is in the lead.
