Louis Delmas satisfied mentally after his preseason debut

The Lions have managed safety Louis Delmas’ practice time closely all summer in hopes of keeping Delmas and his balky left knee on the field as much as possible during the season.

While that hasn’t meant a lot of reps for Delmas with his teammates, it did keep him healthy enough to make his preseason debut against the Patriots last week. Delmas played just 12 snaps, making a tackle and recovering a fumble, but even that brief appearance on the field did good things for the veteran. Delmas said that it took a weight of his mind by satisfying his need to know that he was able to play after getting relatively little work in the offseason or training camp.

“That performance was more satisfaction for me — self-satisfaction not really [as much] physically as it was mentally,” Delmas said, via Kyle Meinke of MLive.com. “I hadn’t played football since the last game of last season, and I was very anxious to get out there being that I hadn’t really participated in camp like that. It’s been satisfying.”

Delmas is feeling well enough that he’d like to play in the preseason finale on Thursday night and doesn’t feel that doing so would put him at an increased risk of an injury that would put him out for the regular season. It’s a big change from when Delmas wanted nothing to do with questions about his knee and cause for some cautious optimism in Detroit about the impact he could have for the team in 2013.

  1. Pro football players are like anyone else … they want as much as they can get, and hope to do as little as possible to get it. They’d all skip preseason if they could.

  2. He’ll be lucky to play 8 games, he’s the photo next to the deinition of “injury prone”…such talent, too!

  3. no reason to play. if he plays Schwartz should be fired instantly. hes the QB of that defense when he’s healthy. they need him defense was completely different when hes in there see the Patriots game

  4. Can someone give me the definition of “deinition”? I’m trying to figure out what some guy who clearly doesn’t like the Lions was saying about Delmas.

Delmas has a way of elevating the secondary and the whole defense. Opening day with him back in the lineup will be exciting.
