In recent days, the sea change in New York has been noticeable, as reports have emerged that paint quarterback Geno Smith as the favorite of the Jets’ coaching staff.

But it appears that whatever the long-term implications of a quarterback change might be there, the short-term questions are moot.

According to Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News, incumbent Mark Sanchez will miss this week’s opener against the Buccaneers because of his shoulder injury.

That opens the door for Smith to start (which he may have done anyway).

That opens the door for questions about the future if he plays well (which he could).

That opens the door for questions about the future if he doesn’t (which he also could).

But for the moment, the health questions will keep the Jets coaching staff from having to make the hard call.
