Te’o still not practicing, putting opener in doubt

Chargers rookie linebacker Manti Te’o still isn’t practicing, but he’s gearing up his workouts in hopes of having a chance to play in Monday’s opener against the Texans.

According to Tom Krasovic of U-T San Diego, Te’o was running with resistance on the sidelines yesterday, the most vigorous work he’s done in front of reporters since injuring his right foot in the preseason opener, after just nine snaps of game action.

“But if I get a chance to go out there,” he said, “I’ll take advantage of my opportunity.”

More likely, the Chargers will rely on Bront Bird to start there, and try to get recent acquisitions Terrell Manning and Reggie Walker up to speed.

Of course, in the time off, Te’o has also been able to work with the locals on the pronunciation of his name.

Folks in San Diego want to make it tay-OW, for a very conditioned reason.

“Over here, they try to rhyme it with [Junior] Seau. TAY-ow. SAY-ow,” he said. “I guess it’s a hard name to say.”

He’s trying to work himself back so that announcers have to work on it sooner rather than later.
