Jaguars quarterback Blaine Gabbert is questionable for Sunday’s opener vs. Kansas City with his right thumb injury, the club said Friday.

However, per multiple reports, Gabbert got a good deal of work at practice on Friday.

Coach Gus Bradley indicated that the club could wait until Sunday to make the call on whether Gabbert plays.

“We’re encouraged with what we saw from Blaine,” Bradley said Friday, according to John Oehser of “He took steps in the right direction. It may go up until Sunday, pre-game, when we get a chance to see him. It’s important to see how he comes out the next couple of days.”

Gabbert, 23, suffered the injury in the Jaguars’ preseason game vs. the Jets. The third-year quarterback from Missouri played well in his limited action against New York, completing 13-of-16 passes for 165 yards and one touchdown.

“It’s a day-by-day thing, and we’re still evaluating it. But I did more today, and it felt great,” Gabbert said Friday, according to Ken Hornack of

If Gabbert were unavailable, Chad Henne would get the start for Jacksonville.

In other Jaguars injury news, starting tight end Marcedes Lewis (calf) will be out Friday, the club said. Allen Reisner, Clay Harbor and D.J. Williams are next up on the Jaguars’ depth chart at tight end.

  1. Blaine starts the year playing with a broken thumb, two of his top three receivers out, and the third one still coming back from injury that kept him out of preseason. Never gets easier for the guy.

  2. Gabs receiving corps in the game, if he starts, will have about 10 NFL starts COMBINED, between eight or nine players. I think Shorts has 7, and there might be a couple more scattered between all the other waiver wire pickups and UDFAs who will man the positions.

Blaine Gabbert upgraded from “Awful” to “Questionable”.

Haha, yes, I thought the headline was referring to his overall ability at QB.

  4. Ahhhh, thegreatgabbert already making excuses. What a surprise. Crapert is one of the worst starting QBs in the league but on the bright side, having him start will just ensure us a great QB in the next draft.

Does anyone care that I am going to this game?
My condolences. I have to watch the stinking thing from KC so just know misery loves company.

  6. I do not know why a QB like Gabbert is being sent out unprepared and in such a bad situation. But I am so tired of the excuses for the guy. Good QB’s rise up and don’t need every excuse made for them. Most QB’s would never get a 3rd season to continue after 24 starts as bad as Blaine’s. Yes yes “he is so young” and “4 coaches and 2 GM’s” and blah blah and all that jazz – but as a season ticket holder and Jags fan I am tired of the team being out behind Gabbert. Gabbert is not the Jacksonville Jaguars. Henne played well against Philly and lead the offense to 24 points and solid drives of 80 and 90 yards for TD’s. The defense got some rest and got after Vick.

Most fans of this team are talking about Clowney or Bridgewater next year – cut bait with Gabbert now and start Henne and at least put on a decent game for the paying fans. Gabbert is just another 1st round bust.

  7. Thegreatgabbert is obsessed with Blaine. I picture either:
    A) his mother
    B) a stalker
    C) a groupie
    D) Blaine himself trying to excuse his poor play

  8. The 8 Jaguar receivers (5 wideouts, 3 tight ends) have combined for 122 career catches. Average of 15 career catches apiece. Three of them have had 3 or fewer practices with the team.

If only you could see just how pathetic you really are, completely and totally pathetic.

If I were a Jags fan, I’d want nothing to do with you.
