Interim mayor cool on Chargers’ stadium proposal

Gloria

San Diego has another new mayor. But the city still has its old football stadium.

And it will continue to be that way, at least for now. According to FOX 5 in San Diego, interim mayor Todd Gloria intends to proceed with a plan to expand the city’s convention center -- but not to pursue a proposal by the Chargers that would both expand the convention center and build a new venue for pro football.

“I will not be welcome at Thanksgiving dinner if we’re not able to keep the Chargers here in San Diego, but really they’re two different plans,” Gloria said.

The team presented on Thursday a project that would connect a new stadium to the convention center. Gloria said the team’s idea has too many unknowns.

A campaign to replace Bob Filner, who resigned amid sexual harassment allegations, already has started. The candidates want to keep the team in town, but only with a stadium deal that works for everyone.

Despite years of trying, a potentially successful plan has yet to be identified. Eventually, time will run out.
