No expectations yet for Santonio

Holmes

Before dusting off Santonio Holmes and putting him back in your fantasy lineup after nearly a year, it could be wise to take a wait-and-see approach.

Amid growing momentum pointing to Holmes returning to action for the first time since suffering a foot injury last September, a source with knowledge of the situation tells PFT that it’s still too early to have any expectations as to whether Holmes will play today.

Per the source, a decision will be made based on how Holmes feels when he’s on the field in pre-game warmups. The foot injury has responded slowly and unevenly, with mixed signals and conflicting messages about when or if he’ll be able to play in September, or beyond.

Apart from the foot is the fact that Holmes didn’t play in the preseason. He simply may not be at the level of appropriate football conditioning, resulting in a cameo appearance at best.

So why would word be trickling out that Holmes is expected to play? Someone could be hoping that, if Holmes is on the fence after pre-game warmups, he errs on the side of seeing what he can do -- if only to get Holmes back to being able to play a full game sooner rather than later.

Or maybe the Jets want cornerback Darrelle Revis to be uncertain as to whether he’ll be shutting down Holmes or someone else when Revis steps back onto the turf at MetLife Stadium.
