The Lions’ win in Washington today was costly in one respect: Starting defensive end Jason Jones has been lost for the season.

Jones suffered a torn patellar tendon and will not play again in 2013, Alex Marvez of FOX Sports reports.

That’s bad news for the Lions, as Jones had been playing well for them this season, particularly against the run. Detroit will now need backup defensive ends Willie Young and Israel Idonije to play more in the defensive end rotation, and rookie fourth-round pick Devin Taylor will need to step up.

Jones was carted off the field after he went down awkwardly on his knee.
