At a time when quarterbacks like Mike Vick and Robert Griffin III are chided for not acting like they’re running with scissors when running with the ball, Bears quarterback Jay Cutler draw rave reviews for dropping a shoulder into Steelers safety Robert Golden to punctuate a key third-down run with the game still undecided.
Cutler’s teammates were among the many giving their quarterback two thumbs up.
“They were all yelling at me when I got back in the huddle, ‘Get down,’” Cutler told NBC’s Michele Tafoya after the game, “so I don’t think they were too pleased with that.”
Safety Major Wright agreed.
“I was thinking, ‘Get down,’” Wright said. “But, you know, he’s definitely a tough guy. We know he’s capable of doing stuff like that. So I’m just glad that he got out of that safe.”
The Bears also got out of Pittsburgh with a win, after nearly squandering a 17-0 first-quarter lead. Cutler followed his run with two incredible throws -- one to Brandon Marshall that gained 41 yards to the Steelers’ 22 and a 17-yard throw to Earl Bennett that, after replay review, was determined to provide the clinching touchdown.
Cutler’s ability to do those things with his arm means he should be much more careful when he chooses to use his legs.
