Peyton complains about Eagles getting extra time to prepare

Reuters

Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning doesn’t seem to be happy unless he’s unhappy.

He’s currently unhappy about having to prepare for the Eagles after a Monday night game when the Eagles played last Thursday night.

“We’re coming off of a short week — it’s nice of the NFL to give Philly 12 days and give us six,” Manning told reporters after the Week Three win over the Raiders, via John Gonzalez of CSNPhilly.com.  “So we’ve got to handle that.  We’ve still got some guys injured.  So we’ve got to get some new guys playing.  We’re trying to kind of weather that storm with our injuries.  We’ve got to get ready for an unfamiliar opponent who has got a really good team at home next Sunday.”

Eagles coach Chip Kelly fired back on Tuesday.

“When do we go play?” Kelly said, via Gonzalez.  “We got to play in a parking lot?  We’ll go play in a parking lot.  We don’t care. . . .

“We played three games in 11 days.  I don’t care.  We only worry about what we can control, and we don’t control the schedule.”

Kelly has the right attitude.  Peyton, who as explained below looks to be running away with the 2013 NFL MVP award, doesn’t.

Or maybe he does.

As advantages and disadvantages go, the Broncos have plenty this year.  The Broncos faced the Giants in Week Two after getting to host the Week One opener because the Ravens couldn’t.  In December, the Broncos will get extra time to prepare to face the Texans, since Denver hosts the Chargers on Thursday Night Football in Week 15.

Speaking of the Chargers, the Broncos will have the Sunday before traveling to San Diego on November 3 off, while the Chargers are playing a 10:00 a.m. PT game in Washington the Sunday before Peyton comes to town.

In advance of the game against Philly, the Broncos don’t have to travel.  They were home on Monday night, and they’ll stay home to face Philly.

But if that’s what it takes to get Peyton appropriately pissed off to continue a torrid run through a regular-season schedule short of actual tests, so be it.  The Broncos look to be good enough to win every week, as long as Peyton can stay healthy.

To do that, they can’t afford to be complacent.  Finding actual or perceived slights may be the best way to keep the team focused.

  1. Look…I don’t know how, but I hope the Eagles win. Just so we can hear melonhead whine even more.

  2. All teams do this. They look every week for some perceived slight so they can get pumped and angry for that week. I’m sure in everyone here their hometown paper’s team mentions something like this.

  3. As a Titans fan (same division as the Colts), I’ve been following Peyton’s career closely since he joined the NFL in ’98. I’ve never known him to be petty or a whiner (see Phillip Rivers ). So my suspicion is that either this strikes him as an amateur-hour oversight by the NFL or he’s using it purely to motivate his teammates by making them feel like they’ve been slighted.

  4. That sounds a lot better than opening with two division games on the road, playing a team that has nothing to lose in Week 3, and then going to London to play a “home game.” I’m sure Denver would go 4-0 with that schedule, but a team like the Vikings needs all the help they can get.

  5. well in the brady vs manning debate one thing is for sure you’ll never hear brady complain about another team getting more days to prepare.

  6. Where does he get 12 days? I count 10 (Thurs to Sunday)
Maybe he needs a little more math schooling

  7. He’s right. The Eagles should stop preparing for the game after 6 days, and do nothing for the other 6 so it’s fair…. OR Peyton can stop crying like a little baby that he is. The former is more likely though.

  8. Please somebody…please plow this egomaniac into the turf repeatedly. That whole organization is just a bunch of arrogant jerks who need to be brought down a peg or two.

  9. Peyton is a great QB but he needs to chill, the BB champ played you guts @ your turf & you embarrassed them. What more do you want? Anyway I can wait for January when hopefully you guys see my Ravens again.

does anyone else not see the huge difference in skill levels between these two?

No droppped passes last week by your WR Pats fans! So why did you boy throw for 225 2-1 again? Avg 5.5 Yds a pass? He should go down as the best Dink and Dunker of all time!

  11. It’s hilarious how bad some of you want to disparage a guy who’s playing at the highest clip a QB has ever played. I can only imagine how easy it for 18# to ignore the critics.

  12. First of all the Eagles defense is very bad, no matter how much time they have to prepare it probably won’t make a difference.

Though I gotta say that this sounds like a bunch of whining from five head here. Manning should save the whining for January when he goes one and done for the ninth time after some team walks in to Mile High and beats him.

  13. Tell payton to shut up and do what he does best- play QB…..These kind of scheduling “unfairness” happen periodically.

The 2012 Eagles had to face 4 teams that came off their bye week. (Pittsburgh wk 5, Detriot wk 6, Atlanta wk 8, Washington wk 11). Pit had a bye in wk 4, Det had a bye in wk5 , Atl had a bye in wk 7 and Was had a bye in wk 10) So how’s THAT for “unfair” scheduling!

The 2013 Eagles are of no threat to the Broncos, especially at Mile High!

  14. I like his attitude. It shows me he is looking at every angle for advantages and he is not being complacent. My Cowboys win one game and start to think they are good…then follow it up with a loss. There is a reason Peyton has been this good for so long, he NEVER becomes complacent.

  15. Hope he enjoys his regular season Lombardi.

Oh that’s right, there is no such thing.

All these regular season accolades and SUCKS in the playoffs regularly. Even was mediocre in his Superbowl run.

Do it in January super head.

  16. Peyton is the best REGULAR SEASON QB…so let him bitch all he wants…we all know playoff time he chokes…all he needed last season was a 1st down to ice the game and he couldnt pick it up when it counted….#frontrunner

  17. So…it was ok that the Broncos had 10 days between Week 1 and Week 2…or that they had 8 days between Week 2 and Week 3….but now not ok that they have a short week? If they are as good as advertised, then go out and take care of business and shut the Eagles down. No need to come off as a whine-bag.

  18. I didn’t hear him crying when he got to host the ravens on opening day and then have 10 days to prepare as the article points out.

I do hear him crying when has all season to prepare for the playoffs, takes his team and all the glory of his 13-3 record and first week bye and then fumbles once and throws two interceptions that lead to his team getting punked by the Ravens.

the guy is great QB, stand-up guy and great commercial but he’s choked in big games all the way back to his days at Tennessee!

  19. It’s quite possible he is just trying to raise awareness, motivate his teammates to study hard in the limited time they’ve got.

  20. Postseason Record:

    Peyton (not Payton) Manning
    9-11

    Tom Brady
    17-6

  21. As a Titans fan (same division as the Colts), I’ve been following Peyton’s career closely since he joined the NFL in ’98. I’ve never known him to be petty or a whiner (see Phillip Rivers ).
    =========

As another Titans fan who has seen a ton of games involving Peyton Manning both in person and on TV, I can’t imagine how you missed his petty whiner side. It’s ALWAYS been there.

Great QB, probably the best ever. But absolutely throws his weight around and whines when it suits him.

  22. it appears to me that the media is maybe making something outta nothing here. he made 1 mention of Philly having 12 days and denver having 6. read only the qoutes. the “upset” and “fired back” portions of this seem to be more writers flare than any legit anger or whining. florio, c’mon man. just because “they” write it doesn’t mean u have to.

  23. I can’t wait for the commentators during the game to bring up how Peyton was right and the NFL should be punished.
Jeez. Enough of 18 already. He’s good. We know!

  24. Hope he enjoys his regular season Lombardi.

Oh that’s right, there is no such thing.

All these regular season accolades and SUCKS in the playoffs regularly. Even was mediocre in his Superbowl run.

Do it in January super head.
    ————————————

Brady hasn’t been that great either in the past few years. Has he ever had a team this loaded before? And who in the AFC will threaten them? Honest question… This team is killng opponents even with out Champ and Von Miller.

  25. Complaining? He’s talking from the perspective of his team on a quick turnaround and get it done– stating facts about the teams injuries vs time to recover, etc. I like how journalism loves to instigate something that isn’t really there…

  26. No worries, more choke opportunities coming for ya Peyton. Cold weather playoff(s) in Denver (choke) … make it past those and get to the Superbowl in NYC outside (son of choke). Either way the odds are against ya bro.

  27. Hate on Haters! Actually, playing ANY NFC east team is a bye week! NFC east= weakest division in the NFL Hate as you may, we just keep winning. In Elway and Peyton we trust!!!!!!

  28. Brady vs manning isn’t even a debate. It’s Brady everytime cause he wins when it matters. Manning will put up 5 Tds against my beloved eagles. He’ll be the MVP this season and Denver will have 14 to 15 wins. But come January his team will choke again

  29. @forsbergler

yawn… Come back to me when the Forehead has a winning playoff record. Oh, and also, Brady has 100 more wins than losses all time, versus like mid 80’s for Manning.

Also, you can’t even spell you’re QB’s name. Feel free to take some troll lessons (and spelling) before coming back. You might actually get something right.

Finally, why even post you’re love of all things Brady here? This is about Peyton and doesn’t mention TB anywhere in the article. If you were to do Vick vs. Forehead, I’d understand, and laugh along with you, but throwing in Brady does nothing for the article and actually takes away because people will feel obligated to point out your stupidity, instead of talking about Peyton’s pointless whining.

Its not that Tom Brady is overrated, its that you are an IDIOT!

  31. I’m surprised Peyton Manning said anything about this.

However, as Chip Kelly said, “We played three games in 11 days.” So the Eagles just had a scheduling issue, too.

The NFL, with its Thursday Night Football telecast, Monday night tradition and trips to London, just will never have a “fair” and “balanced” schedule – you just have to take the lumps.

  32. How did The Wizard Who Throws a Ball calculate 12 days for Philly to prepare for their game while the Broncos get only 6 days? Seems to me that Philly gets 4 more days, so 6 plus 4 = 10.

  33. Re: Brady vs. Manning

“does anyone else not see the huge difference in skill levels between these two?”

I don’t think you can make a fair comparison this year. All of Brady’s veteran receivers are either injured or no longer on the team. He’s playing with a bunch of rookies. Manning not only has his full complement of receivers, he’s got Brady’s BEST receiver over the last several years, Wes Welker.

  34. Dude…we played you after your Thursday night opener coming off a Sunday nighter. And now…we’re playing KC who is also coming off a Thursday nighter. We suck out loud right now but the schedule gods sure aren’t helping us either.

  35. NO RESPECT for someone who the NFL changes their rules to accommodate his play to win a championship. He’s good but, the entitlement precedes his reputation. “… Can’t do it!”

  36. Molate`…Molate`….. more forehead than body!
Manning needs to quit complaining, and shut up. The whole team is a bunch of arrogant A-holes who think they are good. outside of Bailey and Miller, I couldn’t tell you anything about anyone else on that defense, and yet, they still think they’re good. It’s a product of Manning. And playing rock, paper, scissors to see who scores is even worse.
Whoever beats them in the playoffs will be my new brotha-from-anotha-mutha! I can’t stand anything about Enver. (No D on this team)

  37. Am I the only person who thought Peyton was trying to make a joke when he said it? I feel like that sarcasm has gone over everyone’s heads. Either way..talk about trying to make something over nothing.

  38. He is pathetic. He came back for ego and risked driving his wheelchair with his mouth for life. Now he whines about this? When he is having a career season? Get a life.

  39. Hey Peyton,

No worries. Elway will get you a change of your pampers. Now, take that sour look off your face and play nice.

  40. Actually this seems like a throw away comment, one where it seems he was probably joking.

What’s with all the whining in the comments here?

  41. after watching The Book of Manning last night, I can definitely tell that Peyton has been a crier since the beginning. he’s just not Peyton unless he’s complaining/crying. oh well, suck it up.
