The Vikings aren’t ready to make a call on who will start at quarterback against the Steelers on Sunday, but the chances that Christian Ponder gets the nod seemed to improve on Thursday.

Coach Leslie Frazier said that Ponder took the majority of snaps in practice, one day after a rib injury kept Ponder from doing as much as the Vikings would have liked during Wednesday’s session. Ponder wore extra padding around the injury, something that he did in college, and said that he felt better than he did on Wednesday.

Frazier also rejected the suggestion that the rib injury could serve as cover for making a change to Matt Cassel after three losses to open up the season.

“It’s purely circumstantial if that happens,” Frazier said, via Ben Goessling of ESPN.com. “I don’t know if there’s any logic in there. We want Christian to play. We want him to get out there and continue to grow and develop as a quarterback.”

The team will wait until after Friday’s practice to make any call about the identity of the starter.
