Eagles were yelling “Papa John’s!” at Peyton Manning

When the folks at Papa John’s decided to spend a ton of money on the NFL, they likely didn’t realize that the endorsement actually would make its way onto the field.

But that’s what happened on Sunday in Denver, according to Eagles linebacker Connor Barwin.  He told WIP radio in Philly that he heard someone shout the name of the pizza company that presumably pays Peyton a pile of money during the game with the Broncos.

“Well I know — I think I might have heard Papa John’s once, but I don’t know who said it, I mean that’s kind of funny,” Barwin said.

Barwin explained it’s common for defensive players to yell in response to the yelling from the quarterback regarding the identity of the “mike” (i.e., the middle linebacker) and other things quarterbacks say.

Far funnier than the yelling of “Papa’s Johns” was the final score, a 52-20 drubbing that had Eagles coach Chip Kelly finally relating to the coaches of all those college teams Oregon blew out.

  1. So while Peyton hung 52 on you, he made a few bucks off of passive income on the Papa John’s franchises… yeah, making extra money is definitely a reason to taunt somebody you Eagles losers.

  2. I don’t see what the big deal is. Players do whatever they can to get an edge, even if it doesn’t work. And I seriously doubt Peyton would let this get to him. I guarantee he’s heard 1000xs worse things. It’s honestly a pretty funny dig.

  3. While the children on the Eagles defense were busy trying to be cute by yelling Papa Johns, Peyton was busy whooping their collective asses to the tune of 52 points. Maybe those guys should worry more about their play, then trying to Baseketball someone into a bad play with childish talk.
You can speed that offense up all you want on the Eagles, the fact remains, they are not a championship caliber team. Even less so with number 7 as their leader on offense.

  4. “He told WIP radio in Philly that he heard someone shout the name of the pizza company that presumably pays Peyton a pile of money during the game with the Broncos.”

You do realize Peyton Manning owns more than 20 Papa John’s locations, right?

It’s good to know that the Eagles can have fun while their getting their @ss kicked.

  7. Peyton is a total class act. I will never understand the amount of hate directed towards this guy.

  8. The Eagles D is even more generous than I thought — 52 points AND free advertising for Peyton’s restaurants. I wish I knew these guys during Christmas-time.

My response, yes he is agreat regular season QB, I grant you that. However, he is not humble like his brother and after the win against the giants, when his brother eli tapped him on the shoulder and said “congrats i love u bro”, peyton kept walking and ignored him until the cameras came, then he shook eli’s hand. if no cameras he would have continued to ignore him. also peyton gets involved in causes that hurt people health wise. he may be talented but he is not nice.

  10. In the 2005 playoffs, Patriot players and fans were yelling “Cut that meat! Cut that meat!” at Peyton, in reference to an ad that Peyton had going. Final score: Patriots 20, Colts 3. Great playoff game in the snow.

  11. Peyton: I’d give you a free pizza every time I lit you up for another score but I don’t want to make you even fatter and slower.

  12. Papa Johns sucks…it’s by far the worst pizza out there. Hopefully MegaHead will slip on a slice in his kitchen.

  13. Papa John – Better ingredients, rediculously low pay scale, crappy pizza.

Papa John is the slimewad that spends millions advertising his lousy pizza and the complains about having to pay his workers as much as minimum wage.

It’s a shame that Peyton is connected to that piece of work.

  14. Could have been an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on the Eagles, though it’d be difficult to provide any evidence that they “disconcerted” the Broncos offense at any point during the game.

NFL Rule Book, Section 3: Unsportsmanlike Conduct. Article 1: Prohibited Acts. There shall be no unsportsmanlike conduct. This applies to any act which is contrary to the generally understood principles of sportsmanship. Such acts specifically include, among others: . . . (i) Using acts or words by the defensive team that are designed to disconcert an offensive team at the snap.

  15. Denver has a legit shot at 16-0. They probably won’t get it but no way they are any worse than 14-2. That said another playoff failure and nobody will remember the regular season.

  16. “Papa John” is an ass, but Peyton is the real deal. He may be a shill for anyone who will pay him, but who wouldn’t given the right amount of money?

  17. Manning should send a pile of those Pizza’s to the Eagles practice facility when they drag their tails back to work on Wednesday, just to put a nice bow tie on this story

Typical Eagle fan response, bringing up regular season records on teams that have Lombardi’s.

Teams with no championships in over 53 years worry about regular season records. Only in Philly do regular season records matter.

Gotta Kill ya Eagle fans, even the ‘aints & Buccs have Lombardi’s. LOL

  19. Their QB doesn’t have any endorsement deals because he is an ex-con. Meanwhile, Denver’s #3 receiver is on during every break.

  20. Peyton is half C-3PO, half cyborg robot QB. The only way you can stop that dude is short circuiting his nuclear operated battery pack implanted and 4M GB processor in the base of his skull. Yelling “papa john’s”? Please.

maybe Peyton the cyborg is using enhancement drugs.??? possibly??? what do you think??? i remember he came out of an ice tub and could not breath. an ice tub opens up the lungs, does not clog them, but prednisone ‘(although prescribed for breathing issues) has that side effect as do many steroids. not saying he is, but it should be investigated.

  22. As an Eagles fan the last thing I wanted to hear today was that the Eagles defense was having fun. They should all have a collective feeling of nausea today.

  23. Papa Johns might have been better served spending all that loot on their employees. You know, a living wage. Since it only takes 14 cents per pizza to give them some health care. Nut you don’t get photo ops with Peyton for doing something good for you employees.

  24. Peyton should have responded with “It’s what I do”

BTW, how many games has Pennsylvania won so far this year? (Steelers + Eagles)……1?

  25. Oh I heard it, I just figured it was a hot call or an alert call for their defense based on whatever Manning was saying.

The fact that it wasn’t and it was just an Eagle trying to get into Manning’s head is laughable.

  26. Class Act,,,,,Obviously that guy did not see SB XLIV

Nothing worse than a sore loser, and a phone call later after the News chastizes you, doesn’t make up for it. If you like Bill O’Reilly, he should have given Manning a pinhead award.

  27. Hey Payton what would you like on your pizza?
“Hum, let me get half with that good meat…..spam and half with the cheap stuff….eagle…….thin crust please.”

Care to elaborate on what causes he supports that harm people health wise? As far as his interaction with his brother after the game, that means nothing. The game just ended and emotions were running high. They probably had a long private talk together afterwards. You’re right Peyton is a great regular season qb, but he isn’t exactly the choke artist everyone portrays him to be. Last time I checked football is a team sport. Winning and losing does not solely fall on the quarterback. Mannings carreer playoff qb rating is 88.4, with bradys only slightly higher at 89.1. Funny how everyone regards Brady as clutch and manning a choker.

  30. There is another article posted with a video clip showing it was the Payton himself and the Denver offense using “Papa John’s” to call an audible..

  31. siknutty

yes Eli Manning is a better playoff clutch QB than Peyton and even Tom Brady is better at that than Peyton. remember what happened against the ravens last year. as for the health wise comment, Peyton does not support the healthcare law to help small businness with low cost healthcare for employees as part of his endorsement of the pizza that tastes like cardboard with sauce;) papa johsn is against the healthcare, and their pizza is awful. thanks for the exchange.

  32. Yeah, that’ll show him. Especially since the Eagles hammered Denver. Oh wait…

Anyway, it’s not like Papa Johns will make Manning enough money for ten lifetimes. Oh wait…

You won’t find any of us crying over that. We know we stink. The thing is, we have won Super Bowls, including one two years ago. Eagles fans will never be able to make such a statement.

Too bad Manning is a terrible playoff QB.
    —————

Enough of this hater narrative. Until now, when has Peyton ever had a great defense?

  35. Both will do anything for a buck.
John is a dope who doesn’t want to pay his employees health care but has a 15000 sq foot mansion with 14 cars in the garage. Then he complained the price of pizza will have to go up to help him pay for health care and a study showed that it would total 9 CENTS A PIE.
He’s greedy and do a google on his “fresher ingredients” sometime and you will find it’s just talk.
Forget him and go to your local pizza joint and you will find better pies, better service, lower prices and no hype needed from the NFL

  36. It was better when Scott Fujita trolled him in Super Bowl 44. “Peyton, I can eat Oreos faster than you!” and “How about you throw us a few?” were some of the jabs caught on Sound FX.

  37. That comment was taken out of context people. The whole exchange was
Philly Player: “What’s the best food to eat while you are watching the playoffs?”

    Another Philly Player: “Papa Johns”

Philly player : “Thanks I’ll remember that”

  38. edithpiaf51;

Eli won’t have a chance to prove how “clutch” he is when the giants miss the playoffs.. Remember, it took Eli a miracle throw on 4th and long to beat the patriots in the super bowl.

As far as the ravens game last year, you clearly must have not watched the game because the loss belongs solely on the defense and terrible play calling by Denver’s coaching staff. Yea Peyton threw a very costly interception in overtime but it would never have gotten to that point had Rahim Moore not made an epic fail in coverage. Peyton had a very good game. Maybe if you did more than simply read the stat line after the game you would know that. His first int was deflected.

Again, football is a team sport. Brady probably would have won the second Super Bowl against the giants had his receivers not dropped several, pivotal, catchable passes in the 4th quarter. Just like Eli probably wouldn’t have won those two Super Bowls had Brady’s receivers caught those key throws and if he didn’t complete that miracle completion on 4th and long. See where I’m going here with this?? It’s very hard to win a Super Bowl. It takes a combined TEAM effort to win. Labeling a quarterback a choke artist or clutch is just plain silly, especially when they have very similar playoff qb ratings.

His endorsement of papa johns is simply business, although I’m sure it has to do with the fact that his wife recently opened several of their franchises. Peyton manning is having a career year and will retire as one of the best to ever play the position. Stop hating on the man and start enjoying what he brings to the game.

  39. This siknutty clown lmao. Acting like the season is over. You gotta love people who are fans of other teams but spend more time hoping the Giants lose and Eli has a bad game, so that you can trot out your nonsense that you spoke prior to 2007, rather than the fortunes of your own team.

  40. Thank you Mr Wright 2012 for defending Eli Mannijg. You are right. Skinutty is wrong about Eli. I am so sick and tired of Eli bashing. He is a great QB but his team is hurting and yes football is a team sport.

Skinutty, yes I did watch the Bronco vs Raven playoff game last year and yes I do agree the defense had some issues. However, Peyton throw an interception not in the situation where he had a WR available, he just choked, simple as that. I am really tired of the Eli bashing. I am both a Giants and Broncos fan. I love both teams very strongly and its hard for me when they play each other. But I also support Eli even if this season he does not get a chance to show his clutch ability. It is not his fault, it is his team, not working him. It is like congress refuses to work with the president. the Giants refuse to work with Eli. a QB cannot do much if WR drop balls and fumble and miss. that is out of his control. Please LEAVE ELI ALONE.
I understand that the endorsement of PapaJohns is business but one should not align themselves with a business that does not believe in healthcare for its workers or offering them a livable wage. Sweatshops are outlawed.

  41. The Eagles defensive players yelling “Papa Johns” must have happened in the first half.

Because the Eagles were yelling “Uncle” about 4 minutes into the 3rd quarter.

  42. Would anyone be surprised if Papa John was on offender registry somewhere…just has that look about him.

  43. “Remember, it took Eli a miracle throw on 4th and long to beat the patriots in the super bowl.”

What games did you watch, Eli never had a 4th & long in either Super Bowl. That’s just completely inaccurate. Maybe the 4th you are talking about was the 4th quarter where the Giants shined in both Super Bowls. Stop making up stories to defend your Pat’s getting beat in both Super Bowls.

  44. 53-20 says a lot but to let Osweiller put up points on your defense says even more. That Eagles D looked like they were not even trying sometimes either that or Denver was that much better.

  45. Peyton bought more than two dozen Papa John’s franchises in Colorado last year. He is invested, not just a figurehead.

Thank you so much, bigbway000 for clearing the air and defending Eli. I truly appreciate it as you said exactly what I wanted to say.

  47. Maybe this is why Peyton made the comment about Thunder (the horse the broncos run on the field after every score) needing an IV after the game.

    Now THAT was funny!

  48. On the road with no production from the TE position. Thin at WR. O-line playing poorly negating the running game. And in 1st place in the division. See you in the playoffs.

  49. Flacco went on the road and threw 5 picks and was still in the game against the Bills. With no production from the TE position. Thin at WR. And the O-line playing poorly negating the running game. And with 45 seconds left on the clock. The Bills QB was stalling and wouldn’t take a knee and didn’t strap on his helmet when Suggs sacked him. The refs threw a flag. What are you scared of? Ravens are 2-2 and in 1st place in the division. See you in the playoffs.

  50. That worked out well. He really seemed off of his game. Can you imagine if they didn’t yell that? Maybe he would have put up 70 pts. It’s amateur night at the Apollo in Philly from GM to coach to players.
