Patrick Peterson says he’s the best cornerback in the game

AP

Cardinals coach Bruce Arians recently has dubbed Patrick Peterson the best cornerback in the NFL.  (Then again, Arians also said that Levi Brown is an “elite” left tackle.)

Peterson isn’t inclined to disagree with his coach on that point.  (The first one, not the second.)

“That fires me up, Coach Arians has that type of motivation to give to his players,” Peterson told Erik Kuselias in an interview that aired on Wednesday’s Pro Football Talk on NBCSN.  “I definitely feel like I am the best corner in the game.  I just want to continue getting better every week.  I believe if I do my job to the best of my ability, which is going out there and not letting the opponent’s number one receiver to get off and have a big game, I believe we have a big opportunity of winning the ball game.  I’m pleased to have that opportunity each and every week to go against the offense’s best receiver.  I believe that if you can do that week in and week out then there’s no question that you are the number one defensive back in the league.”

Peterson gets his next chance to to do that on Sunday, against the Panthers and their No. 1 receiver.

“I have to do my part by slowing down Steve Smith and not letting him get off any big plays because he’s the Energizer bunny, you can’t let him get big plays early,” Peterson said.  “If you do that, that’s something that gets him going.  So I have to pretty much take him out of the game early, I know that’s a tough task, but I’m definitely ready for it.”

The Cardinals need to be ready to get the win at home, because in their next two games the team and Arians will get to “see the dominance” of the 49ers and the Seahawks.

  1. Peterson is the best kick returner
    Sherman is the best corner
Revis has the history, but he’s not 100%

  2. He is tough. Really tough. As much as I can’t stand Sherman up in Seattle, he might have an edge up on my man Peterson…

  3. Yeah, about the “best cornerback” thing, wait until your peers tell you that, OK bro? Just sayin’ because there’s this guy in Seattle who also says he’s the best corner…

  4. Funny how a certain CB in Tampa doesn’t seem to be part of this conversation anymore, even after it took a top 15 pick and a ridiculous contract to get him.

We hear lots about him “erasing an opponent’s #1 receiver,” but he’s never made the kind of game changing plays we saw from Peterson and (as much as I hate him), Richard Sherman this week.

  6. What happened to people just letting their play do the talking? I feel like ever since Revis started getting major exposure there’s been a severe drive for corners to claim they’re the best.

  7. He’ll get his chance to prove it a week from Sunday against Boldin. Since Sherman won his matchup with Anquan, if Boldin wins against Peterson it means Sherman is better than Peterson. Follow?

  8. Lesson of the day:

Richard Sherman is the best corner in the league

Peterson though isn’t far off and is a more versatile player because he can do it up on the offensive side of the ball

  9. Just because he says it doesn’t make it true. There’s a guy in Seattle, Tampa, Denver, and Cleveland who would argue that point. on second thought. the ones in Denver and Cleveland have too much class to even spout that they’re the best in the game. they just let their playing do the talking.

  10. He was lined up against Crabtree in both niner games last year. Crab had 13 catches for 244 yards and 4 TD’s.

December 29th they meet again, if Crabtree’s achilles is healthy, we’ll see how good Peterson is…He better hope Kaepernick keeps up the poor play…

  11. I believe that Patrick Peterson isn’t just the best cornerback, but the best defensive back in the NFL. He’s loaded with talent all around, has great hands, very physical, elite speed and instincts that set him apart from others.

Richard Sherman is not far behind, and Aquib Talib is making his case why he should be named.

  12. Yes, Peterson is one of the best CBs in the NFL, but Steve Smith is no longer a measuring stick for ability to cover a premier receiver.

  13. It is always amusing when a professional athlete tells people “im the best …………. In the game”.

First of all – it is rare to find a professional athlete who objectively is the best at what they do and second – those rare athletes that really are that good, rarely feel the need to verbally declare it.

  14. Second best. But not far behind. QBs aren’t scared to throw his side yet. They already shy away from throwing at Sherman (except the blind throws that Kaepernick and Schaub have thrown, with predictable outcomes).

  15. Talentwise yes he may be, Production wise and Mentally he is not as good as Sherman or Revis at diagnosing what recievers are going to do.

Great players don’t need to proclaim their greatness they just do it.. I don’t hear megatron telling reporters he is the best WR in the league.

  16. Ike Taylor is hands down the most complete cornerback in the NFL. Anyone who disagrees, doesn’t study the tape.

  17. The argument could be made for him but I do think guys like Tillman, Sherman, and Haden are better.

  18. He still can’t carry his team on his back. They’re 1-3 and could be 1-5 in two weeks.
I’d prefer to hear his peers call him the best.

  19. Has a big game against a mediocre backup QB and thinks he’s God.

I’ll put him in the high top 10’s, arguably #4 or #5 but no way is he better than Revis.

He’s up there with Tillman, Haden and Webb

  20. Didn’t Calvin Johnson have like 180 yards and 2 touchdowns in one half against him this season. Sounds elite to me?

  21. What is it about Cornerbacks that makes them all have to put themselves on a pedestal? It’s a team game fellas, get over yourselves.

  22. I thought Calvin Johnson skull drugged u all over the place a couple of weeks ago, he is good but not Joe Haden, Revis, Sherman type good. He does get beat a lot.

  23. Wouldn’t it be nice if big mouth coaches like Rex Ryan and Bruce Arians would just shut up and let the play of their “elite” guys speak for itself? This really becomes tedious after a while.

  24. Vikings fan here. Patrick Peterson is probably the best corner in the league as far as I’ve seen. Joe Haden of the Browns, Vontae Davis of the Colts and (ugh) Richard Sherman are probably the others that are in that elite class, but if I was rebuilding a secondary, I’d take PP

  25. Peterson is a talented player. But he picked off a rookie QB making his first start twice. I remember the last time he was posted about elite match up it was against Calvin Johnson – 116 and 2 TD’s. Including a 72 yard TD where Patrick thought Calvin had koodies.

  26. Did it ever occur to PP and that twat-waffle in Seattle, that nobody cares what they think? Call me when your team wins something that matters you douche.

  27. Yes Peterson is the best CB in the game in which Richard Sherman isn’t playing in otherwise he is 2 maybe even 3 (Revis) and no i am not hating on him just speaking the truth here

  28. When you’re truly the best at something – anything – you don’t have to go around telling people. They’ll tell you.

  29. I wish your skill set would have rubbed off on Morris Claiborne…What a Bust in my opinion!

  30. I’m the best of the best of the best. So there!

Self proclamations are not only idiotic, they are highly embarrassing.

People need to learn to keep their mouth’s shut, play the game, and let other people sing your praises.

  31. Really dude? You gave up like 6TDs last season. Calvin Johnson absolutely torched you. When you can shut down the big boys like CJ then you can be in consideration. Until then, its Revis, Sherman, and Tillman. Why are the Cardinals even talking? They’re bottom feeders of the division. Shut up.

  32. The best corner in the league doesn’t let Megatron rack up 6 catches, 118 yards, and 2 TD’s on them. He got owned in that game, Calvin was his daddy.

  33. Peterson is very good no doubt…but he is not the best corner…Richard Sherman is the best corner, Joe Haden is a close second, then Revis, then Peterson.

  34. I still think Revis is the best. Even though Sherman got the intereception return this past week he still got abused. So I have Peterson and Haden tied for third

After watching Larry make him look foolish Sunday, you should understand why he isn’t part of this conversation anymore.

    What game were YOU watching?

  37. Browner and Maxwell were on him for 6 of those catches, two others were zone. Johnson only truly beat Sherman straight up once. Leave the stat lines alone and watch the actual defensive coverage.

Peterson is the best kick returner
    Sherman is the best corner
Revis has the history, but he’s not 100%

    ——————————————–

Devin Hester is the best Kick returner.
Charles Tillman is better than Peterson and Sherman combined. When Peterson and Sherman get 10 Forced Fumbles in a single season then you can you talk. I would wager neither will ever get that many in their entire career.

Rod Woodson is the best of all time.
    Darelle Revis
    Charles Tillman
    Deion Sanders
    Ed Reed

Peterson and Sherman are big mouths and way overrated!

  39. Richard Sherman has been locking WR’s down ever since he got the starting job. No doubt the best corner in the NFL (Right Now). Revis, what you’ve done is extraordinary, but that was THEN, this is now. 2008-2011 Revis was the best, but times change. Best corners in NFL (as of today):

    1) Richard Sherman (1st team all pro, having a phenomenal 2013 season)

    2) Charles Tillman (1st team all pro, also having a great year)

    3) Darrelle Revis (Sorry, he’s done nothing this year to put him above the top 2 + he just just got burned for the GW touchdown by Larry Fitzgerald last week)

    4) Tim Jennings (2nd team all pro)

    5) Patrick Peterson

These could change, and you could argue your case, but in my opinion based on what I’ve seen this year, this is how it goes…

  40. Devin Hester is the best Kick returner.
Charles Tillman is better than Peterson and Sherman combined. When Peterson and Sherman get 10 Forced Fumbles in a single season then you can you talk. I would wager neither will ever get that many in their entire career.

Bro, you’re CLEARLY a bears fan, so OF COURSE you’re gonna toot your own teams’ horn.

News Flash: Just because someone can force fumbles DOES NOT mean they can play better man coverage, and in case you didn’t know: a major part of playing corner is how well you play man coverage. Look at the stats. Sherman was the best last year and already he’s the best this year. QB’s have the lowest QBR out of ANY corner in the league when throwing in Sherman’s direction.

And as far as Rod Woodson, Prime, etc. We’re talking about the best in the game as of today. Another thing: what’s wrong with shutting down your opponent and letting them know about it? All great athletes do it.

As far as kick returner: Devin Hester is the best I’ve ever seen. Prime was also amazing, Peterson is good, but Hester is on another stratosphere.
