Tackle Eugene Monroe officially became a member of the Baltimore Ravens on Thursday and he’d like to avoid a move to another team once this season comes to a close.
Monroe called the move to the Ravens from the Jaguars “an exciting change” and said it was “refreshing” to come to a new team after four-plus years with the Jags. The impending free agent also said he’d like to stay in Baltimore for the long term and sees the fact that the Ravens broke from tradition to make a midseason trade as a sign that they feel the same way.
“It doesn’t look like they brought me here the way they did to not have me here for the long term,” Monroe said, via the team’s website. “I have to do my thing on the field, prove that I deserve this opportunity, which I’m fully confident I will.”
Monroe’s probably not wrong about the Ravens’ plans. The price the Ravens paid -- picks in the fourth and fifth rounds -- doesn’t seem prohibitively high for a player like Monroe, especially when you factor in the fact that the Ravens won’t be paying him more than a prorated portion of the veteran’s minimum because the Jags are picking up the rest of the tab, but they have an opening moving forward at an important position and Monroe will get a jump start on the transition to the Ravens offense over the rest of the season.
