When one player wins two defensive player of the week awards in one month, it’s a pretty good bet that they’re going to wind up taking home defensive player of the month as well.

That was the case in the AFC in September. Chiefs linebacker Justin Houston was twice a weekly honoree and now he’s the conference’s defensive player of the month as well.

Houston is tied with Colts linebacker Robert Mathis for the NFL lead in sacks with 7.5 in the first four games. Houston had three sacks in the season opening victory against the Jaguars and then had an even bigger day against the Eagles in Week Three. Houston had 4.5 sacks and forced a fumble as the Chiefs defense pushed Philly around on the way to a 26-16 victory.

Houston made the Pro Bowl last season and his September has him off to a good start on the way to a second straight appearance in the game.
