Stevie Johnson not expected to miss time with back injury

The Bills are going to be without quarterback E.J. Manuel for the next few weeks because of the knee sprain he suffered in Thursday’s loss to the Browns, but it looks like Jeff Tuel, Thaddeus Lewis or whoever might be wind up being behind Door No. 3 will have Stevie Johnson to target in the passing game.

Johnson left early on Thursday night with a back injury, compromising the Bills offense even more than it was with Manuel out and C.J. Spiller limited by an ankle injury. Coach Doug Marrone updated Johnson’s status on Friday and said, via the team, that the news was “better than expected.”

Johnson has been diagnosed with a lumbar strain and Marrone said that he did not expect Johnson to miss any time as a result of the injury.

That should allow Johnson ample time to work with whoever the Bills decide to start at quarterback. Marrone said Friday that the team will be adding a quarterback from outside the organization and that the identity of the Week Six starter remains up in the air.
