Josh Freeman could pick a new team this weekend

Free agent quarterback Josh Freeman may be a free agent no longer as soon as this weekend.

A league source tells PFT that Freeman could pick a new team by Sunday night.

What we don’t know, however, is which teams are interested. And if any teams are interested at all, they’re doing a remarkably good job of keeping that interest quiet. Other than the Bills basically saying all options are on the table while EJ Manuel is recovering from a knee injury, no team has even publicly acknowledged the possibility of signing Freeman.

And that makes sense, as no team would want to identify itself as interested in Freeman, only to see him sign with someone else. So we may not hear of any team having interest in Freeman until that team brings Freeman into the fold. Which could happen as soon as the end of Sunday’s games.

  1. Not sure why this guy is getting interest. Had a good o line, good young running back, and vincent jackson to throw it to, and still couldnt muster up any type of numbers.

Maybe because he is 25 and has led a team to the playoffs. He’s 100x better than Tebow and that joke got work from 3 teams

  3. Of course another equally reasonable possibility is that Freeman’s camp is trying to drum up some competition for his services when there currently are no seriously interested takers.

  4. The Bucs actually have a banged up, underperforming OL this year, while Vincent Jackson does what he does best, get overhyped- show up for 1 game, disappear for a few, then come back again. Plus look who’s coaching Freeman. He deserves a shot, a new system could pay off for him. It’s up to Freeman to prove to everyone he has what it takes when he gets another shot soon

  5. Quick question: Is the team in question even aware it’s interested in Freeman or is this just a cheap ploy to drum up interest?

  6. Freeman was a good quarterback and will be again. You heard it here first. By the way he set franchise records last year for the Bucs, problem in Tampa is Schiano who made it his mission to run Freeman out of town

  7. Maybe because he is 25 and has led a team to the playoffs.

    —————

Wrong. He’s never been to the playoffs. And probably never will unless he’s on the bench as a back up. He’s been a losing QB through out college and in the Pros.

1 good season in college out of 3 and 1 good season in the pros out of 5… There’s a pattern there. And it has nothing to do with coaching.

  8. Pretty sure he would be the best QB in Jacksonville. Or if he was patient he could be a backup for Brady, Manning, or another older, polished vet who knows how to win in the league.

??????????????? When? When did he take the Buccaneers to the playoffs? I’ve been watching every year, so I thought….

DON’T WRITE SOMETHING UNLESS YOU KNOW WHAT YOU’RE TALKING ABOUT.

  10. And actually hes not better than Tebow. Freeman is below Tebows completion percentage this year, and oh yeah at least Jesus reincarnate has a playoff win. And don’t give me the team carrying him part because the Bucs team around Freeman this year was better than that Broncos team and still wasn’t any good.

  11. How did schiano run him out of town? He had the chance to dump him and draft or free agent pick up change qbs he didn’t. Everything seemed pretty good until freeman started missing team meetings and acting pretty diva like. And that to his play and is say josh ran himself out of town. God forbid he be held accountable for his actions.

  12. Kinda hard to complete passes when your WRs drop them. He also has a low completion percentage because he hardly throws the ball compared to other QBS.

  13. It’s obviously going to be the Bucs. Schiano will resign this kid to a 20 year 200 million dollar deal and say the whole thing was an elaborate scheme to get the kid a big contract. Freeman will proceed to win 15 straight NFL titles. At least that’s what happened on Madden 25.

  14. I can’t understand why my Browns aren’t giving this guy a sniff test at least.

Cleveland is in first place. No other team in the AFC North looks like world beaters (at this point at least).

It’s 1 of 3 things. 1. They trust Weeden. 2. There are things about Freeman we don’t know. 3. Banner and Lombardi want us, (to borrow a phrase from Major League) to finish dead last…to draft Johnny Football……

  15. My guess would be he is choosing between the bills and browns right now and probably waiting to see if a qb gets hurt on Sunday to add an option of a playoff caliber team to be interested in him.

  16. He might not want to come to Buffalo, because the second EJ Manuel is healthy, Freeman would be headed to the bench. The Bills are 100% behind their Franchise QB and the only Quarterback’s that would be able to unseat him are Peyton Manning and possibly Tom Brady. I don’t even think Aaron Rodgers or Andrew Luck would change the front office or coaching staff’s mind on Manuel. I don’t think Freeman is coming to Buffalo.

  17. nfl4days says he has a lower completion percentage because he throws fewer passes? Did I miss something in my statistics class? If you are 10 of 20 on thrown balls, passing another 10 does not guarantee you are going to complete more than 50% of them.

  18. MN must be signing him. Since this is their bye week they’re delaying the announcement until Sunday evening to avoid being the butt of a bunch of well deserved jokes by all the Sunday NFL TV panels.

  19. Not sure why so many people on this list are quick to blame Freeman or the Bucs without knowing all of the facts. This will probably all come out in the wash eventually.

In any case, Freeman *did* put up 4,200 yards of total offense last year, and the Bucs had a top 10 offense to go with a 29th ranked defense. Not too shabby, and probably worth taking a chance on for the right team.

  20. It would possibly be interesting to see him as a back up to Jay Cutler in Chicago. Solid QB coach, would have time to learn the playbook, and Jay’s a free agent next year. If they can sign him for league minimum, what’s the worst that can happen?

  21. The playcalling for the Bucs has been horrible: nothing but deep bombs available with no intermediate routes. Even Manning or Rodgers would struggle in that system. I hope Freeman gets another chance somewhere.

  22. freeman wasn’t the problem in tampa. it’s the coach as a bunch of unidentified players on that roster have said. but why let the facts get in the way

  23. The reason someone is going to take a chance on freeman is because he is good enough. Probably won’t ever be elite but with good coaching can do some things with the right team. I’m a bucs fan and hate that we got rid of him. Yeah he has had 4 years not 5 this is his 5th year but 1 year a rookie and 2 years with no running back, no recievers and no tight end, and no defense isn’t the best way to help your qb be successful. He only had Doug Martin and v jax for 1 year and he did pretty good things for the bucs. The defense cost us most of those games last year and besides the horrible 4 games at the end of the season he played well. 25tds and 8int up to that point. I think he was trying to do too much at the end. Anyways sorry about the long post just seems a lot of people don’t have their facts straight

    —————————————
If that is true then that explains why they have sucked since Kelly retired. No one sane would pass on Rodgers or Luck for Manuel.

  25. I think Minnesota would be the best landing spot he would definitely be an upgrade over ponder and it would give the Vikings the rest of the season to decide if they want to keep him or not all at the minimum vet salary.

  26. 49ers backups are Colt Mccoy and John Skelton how can they not go after Freeman???????

  27. Who could the team that wants Freeman be? Obviously, he doesn’t want to be a back-up, so teams that would insert him immediately would be: (1) Browns(2) Jags(3) Raiders

If there is REALLY is someone interested in Freeman, I believe the Browns or Jags are the ones. They don’t take team photos until April.

  28. seachicken64 No genius, im saying each incompletion hurts more. If you throw 20 passes, make 9, but 4 incompletions are drops then your 65% completion just dropped to 45% based off of 4 passed.

  29. “Josh Freeman picks the Bronco’s, Bronco’s say Np Thanks.
Freeman picks the Patriots, they say No Thanks,
Freeman picks the Chargers, they say No Thanks
Freeman picks the Colts, they say No Thanks
Freeman picks the Jets, They ask what size are your shoes…

  30. freeman wasn’t the problem in tampa. it’s the coach as a bunch of unidentified players on that roster have said. but why let the facts get in the way

    ———————————

So a source who refuses to mention names says a bunch of players are unhappy with the coach. You take that as a fact?

But why let unbias opinions get in the way.

  31. Theres a few issues with freeman. I’d expect he could become a better player by backing up a quality veteran. (Jacksonville) >_>

  32. If he signs with the Bills he’s guaranteed a multi week audition for other teams ahead of free agency in 2014. Not too many other teams can promise that.

  33. Freeman was doing well and progressing until Schiano became the coach and turned the team into a laughing stock…

    ———————————

Wrong. Freeman has been regressing since the 2010 season. Thats before Schiano got here. A couple years before.

Clearly some of you have no clue what you are talking about.

  34. I wonder if those who say he doesn’t have talent are aware that he finished NINTH in passing yards last year, ahead of Eli, Schaub, Flacco, Rivers, Roethlisberger… They weren’t losing games last year because of him! Clearly he has SOME talent and ability!

It’s all scheme, look at how Rivers is doing this year….Freeman, in the right system will explode.

    ——————-

    REALLY SC711???

IT ISNT THE SCHEME RIVERS IS IN.HE IS GETTING GREAT OFfensive line work.rivers was off last few seasons due to injuries at key positions and his oline sucking.rivers had v jackson before and jackson and him did well.freeman is a very innacurate qb and was overhyped imo. no excuses for freeman to be struggling like he was this year.he has talent around him.he is not a leader,u can tell by the way he is on the field.not very vocal on commanding the offense! rivers had a bump in the road but has put up the numbers since he became a starter in 2006.river has led his team to the playoffs as well. when rivers has time to pass he is good! v jackson is a stud,im sure the chargers would take him back in a heartbeat now that gm aj smith is gone!

When did he take us to the playoffs? HE NEVER HAS.

  37. It will be the Eagles. Vick’s on the last year of his contract. Bring Freeman in now and see if he’s a good fit for this offense. If not you cut him at the end of the year.

  38. freeman was 1 of only 10 QB’s last year to throw for 4000 yards …. Bucs had the worse pass defense in league history last year. ….

With good coaching the guy can be a stud QB . s a freeman fan I hope he goes to Browns or the Raidahs !

  39. Freeman doesn’t really care were he ends up because Tampa Bay is just a hot mess. The players hate the coach and know he’s an amateur. Total waste. nothing personal, but he is in way over his head.

  40. Freeman did not take the Bucs to the playoffs in 2010. However, out of 12 playoff teams, only 6 had a better record than Tampa at 10-6. Freeman made his own share of mistakes, but he could be successful again given some time to re-examine his situation, and in the right system. If he insists on starting now, that will hurt his chances.

  41. Freeman can afford to pick and choose. I’m not sure if any teams are going to commit tomthe guy as a franchise QB but as a back up or a temporary fill in he’d be great. He has to decide if he’s going to backup on a good team or go to a temporary situation like Buffalo or Oakland.

  42. He land with someone. He’s better than most back ups in the league. And he has experience starting. That said, he better be realistic with his price tag.

  43. The problem in Tampa was not Josh Freeman. The problem in Tampa is GREG SCHIANO. The Bucs have an all pro roster with a Pop Warner coach. Run him out of town and ship his buddy, Mark Dominik, with him.

  44. I had the Bucs as a possible playoff team before pre-season. After watching them play the Ravens in the pre-season, the Bucs are good minus Freeman.

  45. I don’t foresee the Bills as the next stop for Freeman, just doesn’t make much sense for Freeman or the Bills. Freeman probably wants a long term situation and the Bills Franchise QB is EJ Manuel right now, the city of Buffalo does not need any more drama on top of the Byrd drama. The team that makes the most sense for both parties would be Minnesota. You have a great running attack to take some pressure off the QB and lets be honest Ponder is not the franchise QB everyone thought he would be, its time to move on. Now Arizona would also be interesting, as they have a decent defense and some great receivers along with an aging QB in Palmer. I think either of those teams are high on Freeman’s list. And I guess you could throw Jags and raiders into the mix…but they are probably his 3rd or 4th option.
