The Giants fell to 0-5 on Sunday by following what’s quickly become a familiar script for them this season.
They kept the game close into the second half before completely unraveling under an avalanche of mental and physical mistakes that allowed the Eagles to run away with the game in a rout. Three of those mistakes were interceptions thrown by Eli Manning, which combined with three intentional grounding penalties to make for another bad day for the quarterback in a season that’s yet to produce a good day.
After the game, coach Tom Coughlin said Manning was “way, way too good a player” to have thrown 12 interceptions already this season and said that the quarterback needs to stop trying to conjure up plays out of thin air.
“I honestly believe that he’s trying so hard to get us a win, he’s almost put too much on himself,” Coughlin said, via Gary Myers of the New York Daily News. “He keeps it all pretty much inside. I’m not making excuses. There were a couple of those plays that were terrible.”
Manning agreed that he needs to do a better job of taking a sack or throwing the ball away when he’s under pressure, something that’s easier said than done when you’re under pressure on almost every snap because your offensive line is struggling. It still has do be done, though, especially if the Giants are unwilling to otherwise alter their offensive approach to deal with the reality that’s playing out on the field every week.
