Week Six Power Rankings

Getty Images

1. Broncos (6-0; last week No. 1):  The Colts likely will have fireworks for the Peyton Manning homecoming — and they’ll be aimed right at him.

2. Chiefs (6-0; No. 5):  They finally have as many wins as they had Pro Bowlers in 2012.

3. Seahawks (5-1; No. 4):  When Percy Harvin returns, a great team could become unstoppable.

4. Patriots (5-1; No. 6):  Who would have dreamed that an undrafted rookie from Cincinnati would do so much better in No. 85 than the veteran player from Cincinnati?

5. Saints (5-1; No. 2):  Rob Ryan didn’t do much better than his twin brother has done in Foxborough.

6. Colts (4-2; No. 3):  The bad news?  They dropped four passes.  The good news?  They only dropped three spots.

7. 49ers (4-2; No. 8):  When Raiders fans are the best behaved Bay Area fans, that’s a problem.

8. Packers (3-2; No. 9):  So why did all those teams pass on Eddie Lacy again?

9. Lions (4-2; No. 10):  After all those first-round selections squandered on pass-catchers, it’s fitting that the Lions landed Joseph Fauria without having to use a draft pick.

10. Bears (4-2; No. 11):  Based on the way he played, Brandon Marshall should wear those green shoes every week.

11. Ravens (3-3; No. 7):  They may need to fire a coordinator in December again.

12. Dolphins (3-2; No. 12):  For a change, the bye week meant something other than a guaranteed respite from losing.

13. Bengals (4-2; No. 14):  They continue to play up and down to the level of the competition.

14. Eagles (3-3; No. 20):  Three years after Mike Vick supplanted Kevin Kolb while he was injured, Nick Foles could be doing it to Vick.

15. Cowboys (3-3; No. 21):  The best way to avoid Tony Romo blowing a game late?  Make sure the game isn’t in doubt late.

16. Chargers (3-3; No. 19):  They’re still too inconsistent to contend for a playoff berth, especially with a pair of undefeated teams in the division they used to dominate.

17. Browns (3-3; No. 13):  The Factory already has run out of Gladness.

18. Rams (3-3; No. 22):  At least one of the team’s first-round picks is making a major impact.

19. Titans (3-3; No. 15):  If moral victories were real, the Titans would have three of them.

20. Jets (3-3; No. 16):  With the Patriots returning to New Jersey, it’s Buttfumble Week at MetLife Stadium.

21. Cardinals (3-3; No. 17):  Bruce Arians didn’t necessarily “see the dominance” of the 49ers, but he saw enough to beat his team.

22. Raiders (2-4; No. 18):  Now that the Raiders have found their quarterback, they’d better do a better job of protecting him.

23. Panthers (2-3; No. 25):  The Panthers don’t win often, but when they win, they win big.

24. Bills (2-4; No. 24):  There are bad quarterback situations, and then there are quarterback situations so bad that Matt Flynn gets a spot on the depth chart.

25. Texans (2-4; No. 23):  And now we know why Gary Kubiak didn’t bench Matt Schaub for T.J. Yates.

26. Falcons (1-4; No. 27):  Some thought the Week Seven game between Atlanta and Tampa would be a battle for first place in the division.  Instead, it’ll be a battle for last place.

27. Redskins (1-4; No. 28):  The controversy regarding the team’s name could become a useful distraction for the team’s disappointing performances.

28. Vikings (1-4; No. 26):  Josh Freeman possibly wants a Mulligan.

29. Steelers (1-4; No. 29):  Beat the Ravens on Sunday, and things could get interesting in the AFC North.

30. Buccaneers (0-5; No. 30):  How can a team with so many good players be so bad?

31. Giants (0-6; No. 31):  How can a team with so many good players be so bad?

32. Jaguars (0-6; No. 32):  How can a team with so many bad players lose to the Broncos by only 16?

  1. Finally … You have the Titans ranked where they should be without Jake Locker. … If Titans fans are anything, we’re realists. Sure, we love our defense. But without the kid emerging at QB like he was, we’re going nowhere.

  2. Panthers below the Raiders and Jets? C’mon I know we don’t deserve to be way up there with our inconsistencies but that’s not right. And I have to beg to differ, besides WR what really good players do the Giants Have as opposed to the Jags? Id think the receiving corps are comparable to be honest and the the Giants D-line is not what it was

  3. “27. Redskins (1-4; No. 28): The controversy regarding the team’s name could become a useful distraction for the team’s disappointing performances.”

Or NBC, the only media outlet pushing it, could let it go. You know, keep your political agenda out of my entertainment.

  4. I think the #8 ranking for the Packers (ahead of the Lions and the hapless and tasteless Bears) is very fair considering all the injuries they are playing through.

  5. Leslie Frazier at yesterday’s press conference, “when the team is improving then we’ll be an improved team.” That magically insightful moment had to nearly put Freeman on suicide watch.

  6. “31. Giants (0-6; No. 31): How can a team with so many good players be so bad?”

Easy, they don’t have so many “good” players.

  7. Love my Chiefs and the Defense is having an awesome year. But that’s pretty high considering our best opponent is 3-3. Same goes for Denver btw, but no one seems to be mentioning they’ve played the exact same “soft” schedule as us….other than the 3-3 Ravens.

  8. Thanks for keeping my Ravens in the top 15. Although I think you should put them lower so the guys on the team get a little motivation. Super Bowl hangover is in full effect.

  9. What???? 29th?? we just beat the Jets, we should be #1! these ratings are dumb!! Go Steelers!!…. ah just kidding, as a Steelers fan here just glad to see them finally lose the goose egg, figured there will be fans of both sides for and against Steelers running their mouths about being higher or being lower, but considering these rankings mean absolutely nothing, just figured I’d post jibberish

  10. As a Giants fan, I would contemplate putting the Giants at 32, and bump the Jags up a spot. The Jags certainly seemed to put up more of a fight in Denver than the Giants have done. True, they only lost by 6, but that was to a depleted (and frankly over-rated) Bears team. The Jags played a tough game against a team that SMOKED the Giants in NY.

  11. I know the Chiefs are 6-0 but I still find it hard to put them over the Seahawks in power rankings. I get it KC fans your going to jump down my throat and say were undefeated and their not, I get it. However, I really can’t judge KC till week 11 when they play the first decent team (and currently would be the first team they would play with a winning record) in Denver. Then we will finally be able to tell how good KC is. Until then I can’t make them the 2nd ranked team despite their undefeated record.

  12. Bengals at 13 is a joke. Their defense is dominant and their offense is now coming on too. They should be no lower than 10th.

  13. I used to be a Chiefs doubter, but after this week I’m a believer. That defense is just unbeatable and creates so many turnovers.

  14. Hey Chiefs–Congrats but wait until you need Alex Smith to win a big game for you. The Chiefs will probably make the playoffs and once they do they probably will be one and done. Still, Andy Reid is coaching his butt off.

  15. The list is pretty appropriate. The Jaguars are bad but with Blackmon back dominating and Shorts opposite teams will have to play more honest and it’ll give MJD more room to run. I like them over a couple teams right now

  16. The Bengals are 11-3 in their last 14 regular season games… You can say they have “played down to their competition”… or whatever, but the goal is to win football games, and they’ve do so at a pretty good clip.

  17. This year is definitely payback for all the years we were able just walk all over the entire division. And for the time we went 8-8 and make the playoffs.

  18. Passed on Eddie Lacy for Giovani Bernard and would do it again in a heartbeat. Anyone else se that beatdown TD run last week?

  19. I expect the Browns to be at the bottom of the rankings by Wk 8. They have viable QB on their roster. Which is a shame because they’ve shown they can be a competitive, fun to watch, team when the have competent QB play.

  20. All 3 teams the Chargers have beat this season are ranked ahead of them in the power rankings.

With the injuries to key players they have it is nothing short of amazing that they are competing.

  21. Love my Chiefs, but I’m not sure they could keep up with Denver, Seattle, or a few others. I see KC as a wild card, which is awesome from where they were last year, but I’m trying to keep things in perspective. The offense simply needs lots of work.

  22. SD has the same record as Dallas and Philly. Beat them both. And is below them? East Coast biased? I’m not saying they will end up the best of those 3 teams but at this point in the season how do u justify them being below 2 teams they beat with the same record?

  23. If we learned anything from the NFL this week it’s that no one is dominant. Seahawks played a close game with the Titans, Broncos couldn’t pull away from the Jags for a while, Colts lose sloppily, Saints can’t hold on against a depleted Pats team. You can’t really say that anyone has had an “easy” schedule so far this year, because no team is that much far behind any other team. It makes for great viewing and I’m happy the NFL isn’t like the NBA in this aspect.

  24. JCM, nice stat. This dude just has an issue withthe Bengals. The game wasnt pretty but the Bills do play better at home than on the road like several teams (ie Chiefs, Seahawks, Titans). And they had no tape on Lewis to go off of. Seeing how we beat #s 4 and 8 on the list deserves higher ranking. Say a 9. Not to mention the defense we ve played against.

  25. Move the Steelers up and you might gain some credibility.

We’re about to go on a 10-2 run. Jump on the bandwagon before everyone else does!

  26. paulmorin88 says: Oct 15, 2013 9:40 AM

Saints Didn’t play it well they give overrated Brady 3 chances to come back

And Drew and the Saints had 2 chances to put the game away and could not do it.

  27. @jnks10

I’d love to hear your thoughts on the Broncos because the only difference in their schedules so far is a 3-3 Ravens team and a 3-3 Titans team. The Cowboys put up 48 on the Broncos without Miles Austin and only 16 against the Chiefs with MA. The most points the Chiefs have given up this year was the 17 to the Titans.

  28. Why would Dallas be behind Philly? They have the same record but against similar opponents they showed out much better that Philly did. Like against Denver and Washington and kc and the giants. Either way it doesn’t matter because after Dallas beats Philly they’ll be in first and higher in the power rankings

Chiefs fan here. Once again everyone making a big deal that we haven’t played anyone with a winning record yet. Let me remind you all again that THE BRONCOS HAVE PLAYED THE EXACT SAME SCHEDULE AS US minus we played the 3-3 titans and they played the 3-3 ravens. So how come no one is up in arms about how the broncos haven’t played anyone either? Your argument is invalid.

Passed on Eddie Lacy for Giovani Bernard and would do it again in a heartbeat. Anyone else se that beatdown TD run last week?

    ——————-

That guy sure is something. I have to assume the Packers would have taken him too in the second, if they could have.

  31. The Steelers had two weeks to prepare for a Jets team that came out flat on a short week after a huge upset, emotional Monday night game win against the Falcons.

And Roethlisberger was able to manage one touchdown. Mazal tov!

  32. “30. Buccaneers (0-5; No. 30): How can a team with so many good players be so bad?”

Easy our coaching and scheme are absolutely horrible.
I have never seen more hail Marys thrown by an offense in a season- never the less a game. Run left, designed dump off, long bomb, punt.

Oh and lets put our lockdown corner in zone coverage. Here is 16 million a year hanging out over there till the game ends. These clowns would run speed option with Brady if they had him.

  33. Pretty worried about the Broncos defense. Blackmon lit them up as did Romo, et al. When we play a team with both a potent offense and defense, we could be in trouble–though having Champ and Von Miller back should help.

  34. “32. Jaguars (0-6; No. 32): How can a team with so many bad players lose to the Broncos by only 16?”

Because there are more good players than people think, especially in the secondary. And Justin Blackmon is a beast who can make even Chad Henne look semi-competent (until he throws the game away, as he always does).

Also, good coaching and gameplanning. I think the template to beat the Broncos was put out there for everyone to see: Take away the deep passes, force Manning to just take the underneath while he keeps getting frustrated. Get in there and hit Manning, even if he’s getting the ball off so it’s not a sack. Over time, he’ll get thrown off his game. The Denver offense would have been a bit more stymied if the Jags had a defensive line that could stuff the run better.

But it was really just a good taste of what Bradley and Caldwell are bringing to Jacksonville. Caldwell’s first draft is full of guys who are going to be serious long-term contributors, and Bradley is smart enough to work things out to get the most out of those players and keep a team fighting when it’s not being given a chance by people in the media.

  35. Flo is a Steeler fan so don’t expect any respect for the Bengals. Either way they’ve beat two of the top 10 teams an neither of their losses have been as bad as some of the losses teams above them have had (Ravens, how about those 5 picks against the Bills/Colts/Packers/Pats/9ers). You can’t take that away from them even if you don’t want to give them any credit.

  36. Seahawks have been out 2-3 linemen and a starting TE for the better part of 3 weeks, yet they are still winning, and the Colts slipped by them with a 6 point victory. Seattle is the only team not to lose by more than 7 points since 2011.

  37. The Giants should really be ranked 32nd, maybe even 33rd. Out of all the games, and I’ve seen them all, I think they looked real good in one scoring drive. Other than that, the defense as well as the offense looked appeared real out of sync.

I think Alabama should really be ranked higher than them!

  38. @caseyinkc

As a Seahawk fan, I think Denver should be first with KC second. I don’t think it makes any sense to argue about strength of schedule. This isn’t college ball; these are world class athletes. If anything, I am worried about Seattle’s mental errors and tendency to start slow. Thursday night should be fun, though. Go HAWKS and see you next week!

  39. The Chiefs at #2 is a complete joke, those victories as as hollow as they come.

The Bronco’s would immediately free fall if Manning went down, that’s a one man show there.

The team in Alaska needs to play at home and pump the crowd noise in.

  40. @flash128 All I have to say is bad coaching for that game and poor clock management and a few bad calls aide in helping the Brady Bunch.

  41. 13. Bengals (4-2; No. 14): They continue to play up and down to the level of the competition.

I don’t understand how a team can beat the best two QB’s in football, be winning the division outright, and be behind a team that is third (Ravens) in their division, who also lost to the very teams that the Bengals beat. I understand that they lost to the Browns, who at the time and are still currently playing good ball. But besides that they lost to a decent team in Chicago, and beat everyone else. 13 is highly under-rating this team.

  42. @Joetoronto…..We just sacked your QB 1o Times and lead the league with 31! Yes you have injuries on your line but…..10 Times! Not to mention 3rd & 48???? SHUT UP ALREADY. You’re in the cellar, don’t talk about hollow victories until you fix your hollow head.

  43. The Eagles and the Cowboys are both 3-3 and both have lost to the Chargers. Yet they rank better than the chargers… hmmmmm. Hate to say East Coast Bias, but I just said it !!!

  44. The Seahawks are a great team with some great and talented players. But the offense isn’t nearly opened up yet.

Percy Harvin isn’t going to change that. Russell Wilson has not been able to stretch the field yet (due to the pocket collapsing and being chased to the sidelines, usually for first downs, but still..)

If the Hawks are going to be unstoppable because of Harvin, then we need to get a LOT better on the offensive line.

No doubting that Seattle, Denver and the Chiefs are all good. So I just want to throw some facts out there for you jnks10.

    Winning teams beat:
    Denver: 0
    KC: 0
    Seattle: 1

Number of wins by teams beat:
    Denver: 11
    KC: 11
    Seattle: 11

    Points Scored:
    Denver: 265
    KC: 152
    Seattle: 157

    Points Scored Against:
    Denver: 107
    KC: 87
    Seattle: 94

    Net Score:
    Denver: 107
    KC: 87
    Seattle: 63

    Points beat Jags By:
    Denver: 16
    KC: 26
    Seattle: 28

    Points beat Titians by:
    Denver: n/a
    KC: 9
    Seattle: 7

    LOUDEST STADIUM:
    KC: YES
    Seattle: NOT

What people miss a lot of times is besides giving up the least points in the NFL, the Chiefs have scored the 2nd most points in the AFC and 7th in the NFL.

Now for an opinion. This is not last years KC team, these Chiefs are for real.

  46. How can the Skins be ranked that low? I read somewhere that they are the best team “pound for pound” (whatever that means). They are going to be the first team in history to go 14-2 despite starting 1-4!

  47. 16. Chargers (3-3; No. 19): They’re still too inconsistent to contend for a playoff berth, especially with a pair of undefeated teams in the division they used to dominate.
    ——————————————————–

Not a Chargers fan, but after watching that game last night I think everyone can admit that they have a dominating offensive line and that Ken Whisenhunt is a much better offensive coordinator than a head coach. He’s got Rivers looking relevant again.

Does anyone else see the irony in this? A guy with the name of Toronto (Canada) is calling the Seahawks the team in Alaska.

  51. I love Bernard. I was really impressed with his 7 or so yard TD run against the Steelers, but you can’t knock Lacy. Season totals so far for Bernard are 39.5 yards per game, 3.95 yards per carry, 2 td’s.
Lacy’s totals are 67.5 ypg, 4.43 ypc, 1 td. Both have promising futures.

  52. I usually don’t have many issues with the Power Rankings. It’s nice to see that the Miami Dolphins are still among the top 15 even coming off of two losses. The Dolphins so far have faced the Browns, Colts, Falcons, Saints, and Ravens. There are not many teams that wouldn’t be 3-2 after those five games. This week will be telling for us. If we find a way to lose to the Bills when we’re finally healthy, then maybe we aren’t as good as I think we are.

Also, 4-1 looks a lot better than 3-2, but we would be 4-1 if the refs hadn’t been playing for the Ravens in that game.

  53. @whodeybacker – That’s a great point on Bernard’s receiving yards. That thought didn’t occur to me. I wasn’t referring to you on knocking Lacy. It was the comment on how he’s only had 1 good game out of 5.

  55. how can you be 14-2 if you are already 1-4 1bigtex you already lost as many as the vikings, who I wish would wake up I hate being this low. But I do believe since adrian is on the madden cover that is our demise.

  56. did you know that geography is about maps, not numbers?
joetoronto I was saying how can you win 14-2 out of 16 games if you are already 1-4 you can only go 12-4 if you dont lose anymore.

  57. Seahawks deserve to be ranked high. I wonder and question them being at number 3, when they have had a few times showing lapses in judgement and/or made critical errors. However, as a fan, I love the ranking and what has transpired thus far this season.

I agree that they will be tougher and power ranking should increase when they get to use Harvin. I would have them elevated to number 2 when they actually get Harvin and the O-Line back, regardless of venue.

  58. As an Eagles fan, there’s no way the Chargers have a lower ranking than us. The teams we beat are a combined 1-14. The Chargers on the other hand just beat a really good Colts team, and happened to beat the Eagles as well.

  59. “Lions (4-2; No. 10): After all those first-round selections squandered on pass-catchers, it’s fitting that the Lions landed Joseph Fauria without having to use a draft pick.”

One can only assume you’re talking about Mike Williams and Charles Rodgers from the Millen regime. You also need to be fair though in that the current regime has spent recent 2nd round picks on Titus Young and Ryan Broyles and had very little to show for me it plus after a promising start Pettigrew’s (a 1st rounder) production has diminished within the last year and a half.

  60. Eddie Lacy has rushed for 99 and 112 in his last 2 games. He missed most of game 1 + all of games 2 & 3. He is what GB has needed for years.
