Gronkowski gets clearance to play against the Jets

AP

On Thursday, agent Drew Rosenhaus told WQAM radio in Miami that Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski still had not been cleared to play on Sunday against the Jets.

On Friday, Rosenhaus told PFT that the clearance has arrived.

“Rob has now been cleared by all his doctors to play Sunday in the Jets game,” Rosenhaus said via text message.

Those doctors include Dr. James Andrews, who recently was added to the team of doctors.

Gronkowski has been sidelined by lingering forearm problems.  Though he had back surgery in June, concerns about the forearm had been delaying his clearance to play.

Clearance to play doesn’t automatically mean he’ll play.  Coach Bill Belichick has to decide to use him.

If Gronkowski is cleared and if he has been as good in practice as reports have indicated, it’s hard to imagine the Patriots not using him.

  1. If i were them, I wouldn’t play him. The Pats are good enough to beat us. Save the guy for one more week. Certainly without him, it helps us. So, there’s that, too.

  2. hey drew – i know you like seeing your name in print, but don’t you think it was a little to the patriots advantage (and your client’s) if the jets were not sure if he was going to play?

  3. awesome!Brady now has an extra receiver who will get hurt and be out of the game by halftime!

  4. I think his big potential is to screw with the opposing game plan. They’re going to have to approach how they are going to play coverage with him on and off the field.

  5. I hope Rosey doesn’t suffer from premature announciation and this is true. btw ..

Billy O’Belichick is prolly none too happy on an agent commenting on the health/availability of one his players.

Makes me wonder about Team Gronk’s motive here. What if Belichick wasn’t planning on playing Gronk who has now been cleared to do so? If he doesn’t play him now, then he’s the bad guy. I

Why wouldn’t Bill play a cleared Gronk? Good question…unless you are from these parts where Bill’s tactics are well known. He would do it to prove a point: I am Bill. Hear me roar.

    Anyway, Go Pats! Go BoSox!

It’s not like I’m a doctor but he had surgery back in the spring. Did the 5 days since last Sunday really make that big of a difference?

The reports I’ve heard are that it wasn’t his back, but his arm that was holding things up.

  7. Ah the Patriots are 5-1 fresh off beating the previously undefeated Saints and now they are getting the best tight end in football (for the Graham fans he’s equal as a receiver but he doesn’t block half as well as Gronk) and the most dominant red zone weapon in the NFL back.

Gronk doesn’t just effect the passing game though. His dominance as a blocker makes Stevan Ridley’s job that much easier, having Gronk is like having an extra elite offensive lineman blocking every single running play.

Now he’s probably going to get limited snaps at first but sooner rather then later the Patriots will have vintage Rob Gronkowski back in the lineup.

Team’s better take advantage of the Patriots while they have the chance. They’ve been at their weakest but soon they’ll have Vereen, Gronk, and Amendola on the same field together.

  8. YES!!! GRONKMAN , THE GRONKSTER, GRONKALUSKI, THE GRONKMEISTER…

In related news… Tom Brady was seen streaking across the Gillette Stadium parking lot screaming and jumping for joy.

  9. is it me or has the “legend/aura of the Gronk” taken a huge hit this year……he is supposed to be a crazy party boy……not a mommas boy!

True. But those sentiments will be wiped out with one good game. Sports fan have short memories. The saying winning cures all ills is especially true here in Boston.

  11. We certainly have no reason to believe that Dr. Andrews would give his consent for a player to return before he was ready…do we? Best of luck Grok. With that guy taking team bribes to sign releases…who knows how long your return will last…

  12. I love how a guy gets hurt a bit everyone assumes that definitely means he’ll get hurt again. It’s a tough game out there. Every player in the league is one hit away from IR. Some lineman could fall back on Peyton’s knee any play. It’s luck of the draw out there. Hope no one gets hurt. It’s better that way.

The Patriots are better off waiting to play him. If they can win without him, there should be no rush.

Wrong! This is a division game. the Jets almost always play well against the Patriots. Any games the Patriots loose would preferably be against the NFC.

  14. Why risk re-injuring your starting TE by rushing him back into the lineup so soon? I can see this move if the Patriots were 2-4 and struggling, but they are not, they’re doing just fine without him right now. Now what happens if he does get reinjured, or an even worse situation like a career ending injury? Not worth the risk, but as a Bills fan, It doesn’t bother me one bit…
    Go ahead, do more damage.

  15. As a patriot fan i would really like for him to sit out the rest of the year. With the team that we have now i doubt we will win the superbowl and what happens if he injures his back again? I just would rather have a really good chance next year to make a great run than have him comeback to quickly and injure himself again……just my opinion

  16. To those saying “The Parts are 5-1, they’re doing just fine without him!”, I disagree somewhat. Yes they are 5-1, but no, they’re not doing fine. The offensive production is WAY down from past years.

  17. Gronk’s forearm is made of glass…better wrap it up real good, there’s going to be 11 helmets aiming for it on every play. Limited action for game 1 back

  18. Actually, the Patriots won three Super Bowls and had a 21 game win streak by barely squeaking out wins thanks to superior teamwork rather than talent. We called them the “heart attack Pats”. It was a formula they got away from with the 50 TD type seasons, blowout after blowout that did nothing to prepare them for the actual challenge of the playoffs. In other words, the close, tough fought games this year have me feelin’ kinda Super about them.

  19. Am I the only one that feels like the more Dr. James Andrews gets his name mentioned in these reports, the more he starts to take on the persona of Dr. Nick Riviera? Maybe its just me.

  20. Why risk re-injuring your starting TE by rushing him back into the lineup so soon?

    ————————————————–

Yes, in fact why risk any of the starters? Let’s pull them all and play solely with our second stringers, don’t wanna risk any of them being hurt.

Then again, if they aren’t starting then I GUESS THEY AREN’T THE STARTERS.

  21. “To those saying “The Parts are 5-1, they’re doing just fine without him!”, I disagree somewhat. Yes they are 5-1, but no, they’re not doing fine. The offensive production is WAY down from past years.”

As a Patriots fan I’m not that attached to record breaking offensive numbers anymore. I’ve seen what happens in the playoffs to our dominant offenses. I’d rather see a resilient complete team that has battled all year, not a team that is living off blowouts.

The Patriots just beat the unbeaten Saints yet their 5-1 record is still scoffed at. Who has Denver beaten? Dallas? Baltimore? Philly? None of those teams are nearly as good as New Orleans. They also have one of the worst pass defenses in the NFL. We’ll see how that works out in January.

  22. The eternal optimist says “Fantasy owners will sit him this week to see how he does, he will have a huge 60 point in PPR leagues game, and will re-injure his arm on a last minute touchdown play to end his season….” 🙂

  23. @ColtsWinColtsWin!!, Aren’t you the clown who says the NFL fixes games? You wrote the Patriots vs Saints game was fixed. Then why are you still watching the NFL?

  24. With the team that we have now i doubt we will win the superbowl

What? They have as good a chance as anybody. There’s over half a season to improve, and Denver is peaking right now which is never a bad thing but difficult to sustain over the whole season.

If the Pats go on a run and get Seattle in a New York Super Bowl, you don’t think they could win that game?

  25. I love PFT Pats fans. Gronk is clearly injury prone but if you say that in a comment you get a ton of down votes. Is it denial or what?
