Jerry Jones backtracks on Thursday doubleheader talk

Well, that didn’t take long.

Hours after a report that Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said the league was considering Thursday doubleheaders — which the league denied before and after — Jones is working furiously to get the toothpaste back in the tube.

Jones told Daniel Kaplan of Sports Business Journal he was speaking for himself, not for the entity for which he presides as the chairman of the NFL Network committee.

“The league has not been in discussions about a Thursday night doubleheader package,” Jones told Kaplan. “Those were my thoughts. We are focused on further building Thursday night as a night for NFL football, but it has not involved the concept of a doubleheader package.”

The obvious uptake from this story is that now that his stadium has a telephone sponsor, that call from New York asking him to pretty please stay on the same page came through nice and clear.
