Colts should call the Giants about Nicks

AP

When the Colts lost running back Vick Ballard for the year, they quickly swung a trade for Browns running back Trent Richardson.  Now that receiver Reggie Wayne is gone for the year, they should call the team that won a Super Bowl in Lucas Oil Stadium.

The 0-6 Giants have shown no inclination to sign receiver Hakeem Nicks to a long-term deal.  With the money it will take to keep Nicks, the investment made in receiver Victor Cruz, the development of receiver Reuben Randle, a proven ability to find pass catchers, and the ongoing presence of a franchise quarterback, the Giants need to consider getting what they can for him.

The question for the Colts is how much they’d be willing to give up by way of draft picks, especially after already giving up next year’s first-round pick for Richardson.  The question for the Giants is whether what they’d get via trade sufficiently outweighs what they’d get as a compensatory selection in 2015, if Nicks leaves as a free agent.

For the Colts, there’s no rush; they’ve got a bye in Week Eight.  But the trade deadline comes in only eight days.

To date, there have been no real trade talks for Nicks.  And it would be a surprise for Nicks to want to leave, unless he believes he’d have a chance to generate better stats with a new team.

Beyond stats, Nicks needs to consider the value of playing in January, when most of the league is home watching.  With Indy, he would be.  With the Giants, he won’t.

Until further notice, we’ll simply squat on Jim Irsay’s Twitter page, waiting for the news that a “BLOCKBUSTER” deal is coming.

  1. If a mediocre RB is worth a 1st round pick, then Irsay should trade his entire draft for Nicks.

  2. To me, this is a no brainer. Why go after Nicks? He has a long injury history, and will be a free agent at the end of the season. If Josh Gordon is truly available for a similar package of draft picks, it would seem like he would be a much better choice. Much younger, no injury history, not a free agent at the end of this year. Oh yeah, hes also a better player.

  3. Im not sure the solution for replacing injuries or holes in the roster is to just go out and trade for players. History suggests that it usually doesnt work. However, Gordon could be different in that he is young (as young as most upcoming draft picks) and under contract (cheaply) for several more years.

  4. If you are Pro Colts fan – you want the Colts to trade for Nicks

If you are Con Colts fan- you want the Colts to trade for Nicks.

    Who is right….?
    Ill take the latter

  5. How about trading for Jimmy Graham and paying him WR money and ending that debate in NO? Win-win for all.

  6. Gochargersgo,
Sure, he might be cheap for now, but Josh Gordon just came off a drug suspension and is one failed drug test away from being suspended for a year. No thanks.

  7. Nicks, Kenny Britt, Josh Gordon…I don’t think any of these guys is a plug and play option. Reggie’s contributions to the Colts aren’t that easily replaceable. The Colts obviously need an an upgrade at TE also. Sorry Coby Fleener, I’m not impressed with your pass catching or blocking so I don’t think he can be counted on to take up the slack. Same for DHB.

  8. Good point coltzfan166, I wouldn’t think the Colts would give up a 2nd having already traded away their 1st round pick.

As a Giants fan I’d rather they hang on to Nicks. I know it’s a lost season but I don’t think packing it in and not even trying for the next 10 weeks is an answer. Granted a few teams like the Colts and Chiefs have tanked and thrived, I don’t think it’s healthy for a team to have a one or two win season.

  9. The key to getting a high draft pick out of Indy would be to catch Irsay after, say 4pm, of any given day:-)

  10. This just shows why the trade deadline needs to be later in the season.

If it would be in, say, Week 12, I think a LOT more late season moves would happen.

  11. Gordon is 22. Nicks is 25. Nicks has never played a full 16 game season, but has played in 65 of 75 games since he joined the team.

Most importantly, Nicks has shown he can do it on the big stage, while Gordon, playing for a lousy team has not faced pressure. In the 2011 postseason Nicks caught 28 passes for 444 yards and 4 TDs. That includes his Hail Mary TD catch that took all the steam out of the Packers and 10 catches for 108 yards in the Super Bowl.

  12. I remember when Browns/Colts trade happened I ripped Browns for packing it in and giving up on their fans this year.

I watched 3 Colts games since. Browns fleeced the Colts for that 1st round pick. Richardson doesn’t have the vision of a great runner right now. Playbook did some All 22 cut ups that confirmed there is an issue. I know the Bronco’s are stout against the run but Colts back up running back was having more success and got more carries.

  13. They could probably get him for a 5… Going to be an expensive free agent after this year. Giants can either get something or nothing; they will probably choose something

  14. it wont happen, they will play Brazill.more and maybe resign Griff Whalen, and dont count out signing Stokley either, but Nicks want big money next year and is injury proned, pass!!!

  15. How about trading for Jimmy Graham and paying him WR money and ending that debate in NO? Win-win for all.

I’m not sure you understand what win-win means.

  16. As a Giants fan, if Reese doesn’t make a move to trade Nicks to either the Panthers or Colts he should be fired. The Giants can’t pay him and Cruz next year and expect to be competitive.

Carolina makes sense because he if from Charlotte and the Panthers need to find a replacement for Steve Smith. Smith only has a couple years left at best. It gives Cam a #1 for the next 5-7 years.

Indy makes sense because they need a true #1 to replace Wayne. Wayne turns 35 next week. He may come back next year and retire. Nicks gives Luck a #1 for the next 5-7 years.

As for my Giants, we need all the picks we can get to rebuild the oline and get some linebackers that are worth something.

  17. For people on here killing the Colts for the Richardson trade. You are idiots. Colts fans just need to be patients with Richardson. This kid is learning his THIRD offense since coming into the league last year.

Richardson just needs time to get into the flow of the offense and learn the scheme. How would you feel if you were on your third boss in just 18 months?

If you spend a 1st round pick on a RB you want him to break off a 20 yard gain every now and then atleast. Jim Brown was right in calling him an ordinary back. The coordinators have more to do with pass protection and pass routes and have nothing to do with him showing zero explosive ability.

  19. and our O-line isnt the greatest, so.thats why T-rich isnt fetting much running room, and to.say the.browns fleeced.the colts is crazy, the browns gave up.almost.their whole draft for him, wait til the colts improve their o-line before judging him.

These same excuses are made for players that underachieve all the time. He may develop into something better than what he is but..

A year plus he run average is 3.5 yards per carries in Cleveland. Colts he is averaging a whopping 3.0 yards per carry against 7 man fronts. Homer talk yourself all you want but you can’t put a dress on a turd and take it to the prom without people calling you out.

  21. the browns gave up.almost.their whole draft for him, wait til the colts improve their o-line before judging him.

The Browns traded picks No. 4, 118, 139 and 221 to move up to No. 3

    Hardly their whole draft.

  22. I don’t think the Colts bring in anyone to replace him this season. TY Hilton is legit and DHB is looking like he might finally get it. The Colts offense is run heavy to begin with and having Andrew Luck will make anyone you plug in look a lot better. After already giving up a number one that could have been used to grab a high end offensive lineman or tight end, I can’t see another high pick being spent on a rental.

  23. Where are you getting your information? The Giants will have over $30 Million in cap space when they clear off some of these guys who certainly will not be back. Enough with the Nicks talk. They are better served to go get someone like Kenny Britt or maybe Jerome Simpson from Minnesota. Nicks stays. LONG TERM.
