Violence in the stands is an appallingly common occurrence at NFL games, but an incident at Sunday’s Jets-Patriots game in New Jersey has been getting particular attention because a fight featured a man punching a woman.

The New York Daily News reports that New Jersey police questioned a Long Island man on Monday for allegedly hitting a female Patriots fan on Sunday at MetLife Stadium.

A video posted on Deadspin shows multiple fans in Jets and Patriots apparel engaging in a fight, and a man in a Jets Wayne Chrebet jersey hitting a woman dressed in Patriots colors.

All we know now is that police are investigating, and there’s no word yet on whether any arrests will be made. But it’s past time for incidents like this to be taken seriously. Far too often, fistfights in the stands at NFL games mar the experience for peaceful fans who just want to cheer on their teams and enjoy football. The NFL, the 32 teams and local law enforcement in every city should be working together to stop ugly incidents like this.
