Haynesworth says RG3 will learn about “conniving” Shanahan

AP

Albert Haynesworth never saw eye to eye with Mike Shanahan during their time together in Washington. Haynesworth predicts that a day is coming when Robert Griffin III will clash with Shanahan, too.

Asked on Tennessee Sports Radio to give his side of the story after being ripped by former teammate Chris Cooley, Haynesworth said the real problem in Washington was that he played with a dysfunctional franchise. And Haynesworth believes that just as he clashed with Shanahan, and just as Donovan McNabb couldn’t make it work with Shanahan, some day Griffin will also learn that Shanahan isn’t a coach that players can trust.

“I mean, it’s like, you can’t win with that team,” Haynesworth said, via Dan Steinberg of the Washington Post. “And you think it was just me? I mean, look how he did Donovan. See what’s going on with RGIII. I met RGIII. He seemed like an extremely nice guy that’s willing to work. Now he’s gonna learn – I mean, I hate to say he’s gonna learn — about Shanahan, how he’s conniving and everything like that, where he’s not gonna help him out, it’s all about him.”

As so many others have, Haynesworth blamed Shanahan for keeping a hobbling Griffin on the field in last season’s playoff loss to the Seahawks.

“They’re gonna run RGIII into the ground,” Haynesworth said. “They almost really hampered his career last year with the knee injury, putting him back in there. I mean, I think they ought to cut ties, let it go. . . . I don’t think it’s gonna work out. They’re always gonna try to blame RGIII for something. It’s never gonna be the head coach’s fault.”

Haynesworth called signing with Washington “the worst mistake in my life” and said he would have rather become a Hall of Fame player who made slightly less money than the “free agent bust” he’s generally viewed as. So we know one thing that Haynesworth and Shanahan would agree about: Everyone would be better off if Haynesworth had never gone to Washington.

  1. Man, God sure is sending his team some mixed messages. I’m sure he’s just rope-a-doping us until he makes them go on their Super Bowl run.

Logical, what has the Lord been saying to you? Gives us a sign.

  2. They ARE a dysfunctional franchise, whatever one thinks of Haynesworth as a player or person. They’re not going to win any championships under Shanny.

  3. Greatness is hated. Look at Snyder, Obama, LeBron, Tiger, Jordan etc. That’s how I know the Redskins lead by the Shanahans and RGIII are on the correct path. You are all jealous that you can’t have our history and keen eye for Greatness. Bottomline. #BurgundyandGoldStandard

  4. Did he see eye to eye with Bellichek? Did McNabb prove Shanny wrong in MN or where ever else he failed after he became washed up before the Philly run was over?

McNabb is his example to support his point? weak.

  5. Say what you want about him, but the man is right. Shannahan should have been fired for what he did to that kid in the playoffs. For what they gave up to draft him and you send him back out in that condition when you have a more than capable backup? He should have been canned as soon as he got in the locker room.

  6. Shanahan is just a symptom of the real problem–Snyder. The team has 2 whole playoff wins since he bought the team in 1999 and he goes through coaches as quick as the Raiders. He has turned a franchise with a rich history into an after thought.

  7. Shanahan is supposed to be a qb guru and offensive genius right?

So what is his record without mr elway as his quarterback? He’s just not as good of a coach as he his made out to be.

  8. In can’t believe I agree with Haynesworth. Shanny is the most over-rated coach in the league. Every year he continues to wallow with the also-rans, Elway continues to climb in my best QB rankings. He carried Shanahan.

Greatness is hated? That must be why you choose to cheer for the Redskins and not the Ravens who have been the better NFL team in MD for quite some time now. And the fact you think Obama is great is laughable, amusing and sad.

  10. Shanahan’s record with Elway including playoffs
    54-18 .750

Shanahan’s record without Elway including playoffs
    115-106 .520

I’m excluding his Raider stint. Its not exactly something to write home about but its hard to compare his record without Elway against other coaches. Nearly every great coach has had a hall of fame QB. So trying to separating the two is hard.

For example Belichick in the the years without Brady as starting QB(cleveland, Cassell, Bledsoe)

    52-64 .448

    With Brady as starting QB

    158-48 .768

Some exceptions are Joe Gibbs really never had a hall of fame QB. Bill Cowher was good even without Big Ben arrived.

what’s bill belichick’s record without brady? you need talent to win.

  12. I’m surprised anyone takes Haynesworth seriously. His production/pay with the Redskins in two miserable years: 43 tackles, 6.5 sacks/$41,000,000.

  13. I love it. Must have been Shanahan that made Haynesworthless lay on the field in detroit and be carted off only to return a few plays later. Haynesworthless was a consummate underachiever who would lay on the field when he was tired because he was out of shape. He believes that it is Shanahan’s fault that he was run out of football? This dud is just flat out delusional. I can’t believe PFT published his point of view….. Wait a minute… This site also carries a torch about the WASHINGTON REDSKINS name change. How about some good old objective reporting Mike and crew? You guys stink.

  14. I guess that was Shanny holding him down while he laid on his back like an overturned turtle while Vick ran around him for 10 seconds in the Monday night massacre. Cooley was exactly right. This guy is garbage in every sense of the word.

  15. The plot thickens…let’s see if other retired Washington Franchisers make similar remarks as Fat Albert.

Like the old saying goes, don’t shoot the messenger. Jose Consceco is top-5 douchnozzle but he still spoke truth.

  16. His offenses with Denver made Griese, Plummer and Cutler Pro Bowlers. Shanahan’s problem has never been the offense. His problem is not being able to put together championship caliber defenses.

  17. Haynesworthless and “Hall of Fame” should NEVER be used in the same sentence no matter the context.

Yeah, Shanahan made Fat Albert lie down on the ground in the middle of the game against the Eagles.

  18. The team is cursed because liberalism. Please callthe political police redskins.
I’ve posted 50 times. Only go be silenced. REDSKINs.

  19. So let me get this straight. Fat Albert wants us to take his word on something, and the guy he’s calling on to back him up, credibility-wise, is Donovan McNabb?

    Really?

  20. So Haynesworth says he sucked because he played for a dysfunctional franchise. What was his excuse for sucking at the Patriots?

  21. Umm, no… won’t happen with RG3 because Robert is smart and a team player and most of all COACHABLE!!!

  22. So Al, we understand why you laid down for the washington football team, but what is your excuse for the pats?

  23. Dumped by Washington, cut by New England and cut By Tampa. I think it’s more than Shanahan. The guy is a self centered douche who everyone wishes would just go away.

  24. Every player that’s ever had run in’s with Shannahan has also went on to have a stellar career right Albert? I mean there’s You with the Patriots, Donovan with the Vikes, Devin Thomas with the Giants…no wait…

  25. McNabb proved how wrong Shanahan was. Look at the success McNabb had with the Vikings after he left Washington….oh wait. Guess who’s out of the league now?

Haynesworth proved the problem was with Shanahan. Look at the success Haynesworth had after he left Washington and went to one of the more successful franchises, the Patriots….oh wait, they cut him before he could finish the season. Guess who’s out of the league?
