Jonathan Martin says “[d]on’t believe everything you read”

Amid reports that Dolphins tackle Jonathan Martin went AWOL after getting the business from teammates in the cafeteria, and that Martin is now getting some sort of treatment for an emotional condition, Martin has been silent.

Martin broke his silence on Facebook, and a source who knows Martin has helped us confirm that it’s indeed Martin’s page.  (We’re much better with the Twitter.)

“Happy Halloween!” Martin said.  “Don’t believe everything you read.”

He then added one of our all-time favorite quotes:  “Opinions are like assholes, everyone has one.”  (Unfortunately, he left out the best part:  “And they all stink, except your own.”)

Losers of four games in a row, the Dolphins currently stink, and not having Martin will make it harder to beat the Bengals.

Regardless of the truth, the reality is that Martin isn’t playing tonight, due to an unspecified illness.  Time will tell whether Martin or the team will have anything more to say on the matter.

  1. Sounds like in the wake of some of these recent tragedies that players are becoming more comfortable with taking care of their mental and emotional issues instead of letting them fester out of pride. It’s about time and I’m happy to see the change. Much more important than wins and losses.

  2. “And they all stink, except your own.”

    I’ve never heard that. Hilarious.

“Believe half of what you see and none of what you hear.” That’s the best quote for today’s Twitter world.

  3. I’ll give you the benefit of the doubt Jonathan.

If you as a starting LT of an NFL team is pissed off right now, then I’m likely to believe that your GM is directly or indirectly to blame in some way. It sounds plausible and I pass no ill judgment at this time. Unless I hear from kids in your neighborhood that you aren’t loading up all customers with a giant sack of candy goods. Hook these kids up as long as you aren’t working tonight!

You should probably get out a bit more

  5. And how much are you making per game? Probably as much as the average fan makes per year. So tell me how am I supposed to feel sorry for you? Your feelings got hurt and you took your ball home. I am sure Jack Lambert would have something to say about that!

  6. You should probably get out a bit more

I would think I’d be more likely to see it on the internet than at a social event.

  7. There’s no way Martin has an emotional problem, or any other problem for that matter.

He’s a professional athlete and therefore not subject to anything that ails human beings.

Listening to the “fans” who post here, I’m led to believe that the possession of athletic ability trumps all other human characteristics.

  8. He needs to remedy this fast or consider retiring for the good of his health. Mental health issues are not like a cut that heal fast. Some fester for life.

His pre-esisting mental health disorder was made worse by his consistent poor play. The ribbing tipped things off. He is the weakest link in a bad offense. So how are they suppose to manage this issue from here on. It does not help the GM/coach have him playing out of position.

If mental health issues keep cropping up, the NFL will have to give baseline psychological testing to NF players before contracting them to play. This includes players who have sustained concussions.

  9. Mr. six rings: Most of us prefer to live in the present. However, to each his own. If you do decide to visit the present, you probably need to do a bit more praying for this year’s team. I’m sure your God is listening…

Uh, NFL players make a lot more than that …

  12. One never knows what kindof crap people are having to deal with in their personal lives – football players included.

I for one would suggest the media gives him the privacy he deserves to take care of whatever needs to be taken care of.

  13. The man if a LT… This board lacks intelligence if they aren’t aware that the blind side tackle is the best blocker on the team? Call him a sissy to his face.

Mr Martin deserves a lot more compassion than idiotic put downs…
