Broncos will name interim head coach in the morning

Broncos

With Broncos coach John Fox facing surgery this week to replace a heart valve, the Broncos have yet to name an interim head coach.

Per a league source, the decision will be finalized before a Monday morning team meeting at 8:05 a.m. ET, as the Broncos players return to Denver following a bye-week break.

Defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio continues to be the likely choice, even though it could undermine the overall defensive preparation by diluting Del Rio’s focus on that side of the ball. Coupled with the absence of Fox, who was a defensive coordinator before becoming head coach, the overall defensive coaching effort will be diminished if Del Rio gets the gig.

Other candidates include offensive coordinator Adam Gase and running backs coach Eric Studesville, who served as interim head coach after Josh McDaniels was fired late in the 2010 season.
