Dansby thinks Incognito’s character is being attacked

One of the unseemly realities of the Richie Incognito-Jonathan Martin bullying reports is that to some degree, the behavior is more common than many would like to accept.

And for evidence of that, look no further than Cardinals linebacker Karlos Dansby, who knew both after playing for the Dolphins last year.

Richie was a down-to-earth guy,” Dansby told Kent Somers of the Arizona Republic. “I hate all this came out about him. It’s really attacking his character. I hope Martin doesn’t have any backlash from this from the rest of his teammates.”

Expressing sympathy for Martin, the bullied, is a reasonable human emotion. But what appears to be a tacit defense of Incognito seems a bit out of touch at the moment.

Certainly his behavior is being covered more thoroughly now than previously, but Incognito’s reputation preceded him, and Dansby’s current teammates know that too.

“He’s been getting away with a lot of stuff,” Cardinals defensive end Darnell Dockett said. “His whole makeup is playing dirty and trying to hurt guys. Like I say, just Google it up. There are so many incidents where he’s trying to hurt guys and physically bully guys.

“I’m glad certain guys are standing up for themselves. I hope the guy from the Dolphins [Martin] is able to get some help, rebound and continue his career.”

Doing so will require some of his co-workers to not foster an atmosphere in which people who are accused of doing something wrong get a more passionate defense than the victim, or get turned into martyrs of some presumed media witch-hunt.

  1. Yes karlos dansby, people are indeed attacking Richie’s character. I’m a little lost as to why you feel there’s something wrong with that.

  2. Both careers are over.

Martin is a p@ssy, and his teammates will turn on him.

No team will touch Incognito with his history, and now this on top of it.

  3. Is RI a dummy? Yes, obviously. Is this being blown out of proportion? We will never know. The fact that Dansby is sticking up for him suggests to me that the racial slurs are used jokingly from both sides. Is that a problem? Depends on who you ask. But if Martin is truly living in fear, then Incognito is way in the wrong.

  4. It’s not Incognito’s character that’s being attacked- it’s a lack of character and his history that’s being referenced. Bystanders like Dansby and Incognito’s Dolphin teammates are almost just as bad, sitting by and watching, and participating in, the abuse.

  5. Still waiting to see what Incognito did to him recently. Someone doesn’t hold onto something from April until NOVEMBER and then just randomly come out with it. Sounds more like he had a breakdown over the o-line woes and media attention, and now is using the Incognito thing to justify his walkout. Anyone with half a brain can see the logic doesn’t add up.

  6. His character is fair game based on transcripts of the voice and text messages he left for Martin. Incognito seems to be an antisocial d-bag . . . even by juiced up NFL player standards.

  7. “It’s really attacking his character.”

What character? People with character don’t behave like that.

  8. I read the Martin comment from Dansby as more of a warning more than real concern for Martin. Kind of like of like the mobster who says, “I’d hate to see something bad happen to your business.”

  9. Are you really trying to say ‘don’t defend Incognito, he’s a bad guy’? Seems a bit guilty before proven innocent to me. Sure he’s got a track record as an enforcer and a-hole on the field, but that’s on the field.

I’ve never heard much about him being a prick towards teammates before now.

Unless you really want to go on the testimony of a kicker…

  10. Not a ton of guys coming out to throw too many stones at Incognito. The racial aspect is really in poor taste, but the pressuring of rookies to pay and do things they may not want to do is something every NFL player likely has to do. Incognito had to do it without complaint to some a-hole veteran on the Rams back when, and some guys likely rode him harder than others… so he’s passing that on.
Not that two wrongs make a right or that you start bringing family or race into any sort of communications with teammates, but there is also a reason the Dolphins teammates didn’t stop somebody this, or why other players are very careful with their words on the situation.

  11. Dansby is a stand up guy. Per Dansby, Incognito is down to earth guy meaning he is rough around the edges as well as inside. This means Incognito probably is much too rough for the cultured and probably babied Martin.

If this was truly a serious situation, then why didn’t the senior team members raise the alarm or take care of it internally which is what usually happens when a problem like this occurs.

Ok, Incognito is a rough and dirty player and he is too bigoted for Martin’s cultured Stanford and privileged upbringing. And Incognito saw that weakness and jumped in to mess with Martin. If Incognito was actively a bigot on the teams he has been with, he would have been run out of the NFL a long time ago.

  12. sorry karlos for attacking a person’s character even though he consistently gives us reason to attack it throughout the course of his career. Our bad?

  13. Now the bully is being bullied. Why doesn’t he just fight his way out of this? Be a man! Stand up for yourself physically! You are an adult! Don’t hide behind the NFLPA and Dolphins management.

How Incognito feels now is how Martin felt in that locker room. Not fun is it?

  14. Alot of girls when getting harssed by someone change their their cell # or just don’t give it out. Johnathan ..still aside from that could you block anybody? How long of not being able to block anybody did you think it would be before the steroid freaks would be getting on you? If you could have just blocked one person this would never have happened. I sure hope somebody takes this guy to Chucky Cheese today so he can feel better about himself.

  15. Please. Anyone who thinks that Martin is not a man needs to understand that these guys go out there and play a game that brings the possibility of being maimed, paralyzed or brain damaged. I know the argument is that they get paid, but no amount of money can pay for a life in a wheel chair. So if you think he’s not a man, then you’re wrong. As I said in a previous response, RI threatened his family, and all bets are off. Can you imagine if someone threatened your family? That’s not hazing, that’s sick. He needs to be banned for life from the NFL.

    ==================================
Run out of the league like Riley Cooper, who caught 3 TD passes the other day?

Bullying and abusiveness often is not done in front of everybody most of the time- and in this case, it appears that his teammates just stood by and enabled- and being that Incognito is in a leadership position on the team, it may be that no one would go against him. Incognito is in a “senior team member” by virtue of the fact that he is on the Dolphins leadership council, a group of 6 players that act in as team captains essentially, so he held a position of power on the team.

My guess is that text message is only the tip of the iceberg. Sounds like this stuff has been going on constantly. But I guess that’s OK with you.

BTW, “down-to-earth” doesn’t necessarily have anything to do with being rough around the edges.

How would you know if Karlos Dansby is a “straight-up guy”? Friend of yours?

Some people still look at ways to blame Martin, when it’s clear that Incognito, in a position of leadership, is the protagonist. One of the best tools of the abuser is to put the blame on the victim and make him or her feel responsible.

  18. Hey, beachsidejames-

Are you aware that this goes beyond a few texts, and that Incognito and Martin see each other on a daily basis? If it was just about a cell phone, the solution would be simple- but you already knew that.

  19. All the trolls coming out and blasting Martin for speaking up…let me ask you something…

You join a new corporate drone job and the department has roughly 10 people of varying tenure who all report to some drone manager. Who, after giving you your general on-boarding, says that he’s handing you off to the rest of the group. Not his job to worry about your welfare anymore and doesn’t like to hear complaints. Just get the job done or they’ll be someone else at your desk in a month.

So you head out to do your work. Immediately your co-workers explain that there’s a certain fraternity amongst the department that all the newbies are expected to earn their way into. Starting tomorrow, it’s your job to bring in the donuts. Okay, you say…no big deal…$20 to buy donuts is not that hard…

But the asks get harder and harder…Now you’re paying for team lunches and dinners…The team thinks it would be funny to lock you in the bathroom for an afternoon and you miss assignments…

And there’s this one guy who has more tenure than most….and he says you have to do his work as well….and he comes up with insulting names for you…and he calls you and sends you texts saying he’s going to beat the living crap out of you because you’re a new guy and he doesn’t like ‘new guys’. And he knows where you live and that you have a wife and 2 kids…and that if you don’t get his work done and bring him his preferred lunch tomorrow, then who knows what will happen?

And you trolls are all saying that you would accept this? Or “man up” and do what? Punch that guy in the face and it will all be better…

    Honestly folks…

  20. I just think that Incognito is a very insecure person. He got booted off the Nebraska team – and that isn’t all that easy to do. Transferred to Oregon and even they turned up their noses at him – again, quite an accomplishment. Now he’s got this guy on the line next to him who was drafted a round ahead of him, intelligent, and educated – what is a big, fat, lead paint chip eating kid from Jersey supposed to do?

  21. Wow dansby is an idiot. Of course people are attacking his character. He might be your friend, but after hearing that voicemail and all the other negative attention around this guy for his entire career how can you not say he was wrong. I’m all for defending your friends, but dont profess he is unfairly being attacked.

  22. Los needs to cool it with defending Incognito. He wouldn’t wanna get on the wrong side of Dock.

  23. I just about blew coffee out of my nose when I read what Dockett had to say about Incognito! Hello Pot…..meet Kettle!

  24. “Richie was a down-to-earth guy,” Dansby told Kent Somers of the Arizona Republic.

Yeah I don’t know what society you live in, but in ours making death threats and threatening someone’s race/family/personal health isn’t “down-to-earth.”
