Packers place Jermichael Finley on injured reserve

It has seemed unlikely for some time that Packers tight end Jermichael Finley would play again this season and the Packers made the end of his season official on Tuesday afternoon.

The Packers have placed Finley on injured reserve, which means he’ll be rehabbing the spinal cord contusion he suffered a couple of weeks ago in hopes of making it back on the field for the 2014 season. Whether or not that’s with the Packers will remain to be seen as Finley is set to become a free agent at the end of the season.

Greeen Bay also announced that they have activated tackle Derek Sherrod from the physically unable to perform list. The 2011 first-round pick hasn’t played in a game in nearly two years because of broken leg and complications from surgery to repair that broken leg. Given the layoff, it’s probably not realistic for him to provide anything more than depth right now, but the door could open for more if Sherrod shows he’s capable of handling the position.

The Packers also placed linebacker Sam Barrington on injured reserve, ending his season. Barrington injured his hamstring in Monday night’s loss to the Bears.
