Reports that the Packers would promote quarterback Scott Tolzien from their practice squad started shortly after Aaron Rodgers was injured, although there was some thought that Green Bay might move in another direction when former backup Matt Flynn became available.
Flynn cleared waivers after being cut by the Bills, leaving him available to be signed as a free agent but the Packers have stuck to the original plan. They announced Wednesday that Tolzien has been added to the 53-man roster. The Packers had an open roster spot after activating tackle Derek Sherrod from the PUP list and placing a pair of players on injured reserve Tuesday.
According to various reports, the Packers have some worries about the state of Flynn’s arm. He’s been sidelined in each of the last two preseasons by elbow problems and his familiarity with Mike McCarthy’s system wouldn’t do the team much good if his arm isn’t healthy enough to make the necessary throws.
Tolzien, who has never played in a regular season game, is expected to back up Seneca Wallace.
