David Cornwell’s statement regarding Jonathan Martin

[Editor’s note:  On Thursday night, lawyer David Cornwell issued a statement on behalf of Dolphins tackle Jonathan Martin.  The full text of the statement appears below.]

Jonathan Martin’s toughness is not at issue. Jonathan has started every game with the Miami Dolphins since he was drafted in 2012. At Stanford, he was the anchor for Jim Harbaugh’s “smash mouth” brand of football and he protected Andrew Luck’s blind side.

The issue is Jonathan’s treatment by his teammates.  Jonathan endured harassment that went far beyond the traditional locker room hazing.  For the entire season-and-a-half that he was with the Dolphins, he attempted to befriend the same teammates who subjected him to the abuse with the hope that doing so would end the harassment.  This is a textbook reaction of victims of bullying.  Despite these efforts, the taunting continued.  Beyond the well-publicized voice mail with its racial epithet, Jonathan endured a malicious physical attack on him by a teammate, and daily vulgar comments such as the quote at the bottom.  These facts are not in dispute.

Eventually, Jonathan made a difficult choice. Despite his love for football, Jonathan left the Dolphins. Jonathan looks forward to getting back to playing football. In the meantime, he will cooperate fully with the NFL investigation.

Quote from teammate: “We are going to run train on your sister. . . . She loves me. I am going to f–k her without a condom and c– in her c—.”

  1. I would love to have all the facts in this case before I pass judgment on either of these guys. Unfortunately, I don’t think we’re gonna hear all the facts for quite a while.

  2. Um, wow. It sounds more and more like Miami is lucky Martin didn’t go postal on everyone. Yikes.

  3. The Dolphins are a joke and have been that way since Shula (Don) left. This kind of crap wouldn’t happen in Pittsburgh, NE, or SF. Lousy team with a lot of over paid losers. Martin may be a made up a little different than some of these players but no one deserves the filth he has endured in that locker room. Time for the big ass on Park Ave to get in gear and put a stop to this crap.

  4. Ryan Tannehill just released this statement: “Jonathan and I use to talk all the time about how I was going to ride train on his sister. We laughed about it. His sister does in fact love me and I do plan to c- in her c- in the near future. Jonathan was aware of this and thought it was hilarious.”

  5. Now that David Cornwell is involved, Martin’s credibility has gone out the window. Cornwell should be a politician–you can’t believe a single word he says.
He’s like Dr. Narcisse on Boardwalk Empire.

  6. This incident has opened the curtain to what we dont want to see or hear.

We act like we dont want the PR answers from the players, but this is the other side.

So many try to act like this is a business and they are pros, but in the locker room, at the office, they would be fired by any company.

We love football, but probably dont love football players.

Good job protecting the shield guys.

  7. Incognito and any other player who carries on like this can gtfo out of the league and never come back. There’s no room for them.

  8. Wow. We’ve all been in locker rooms with teammates, but that’s a whole new level. Ireland / Philbin both should lose their jobs….

  9. This is a complete mess all around. How much do you think the dolphins have been able to actually gameplan for Tampa? They will be lucky to win another game this year! Great job coaching staff! Way to motivate the players! You would never hear the patriots name in any investigations with unruly players…

  10. Like others, such as VDay, I see a link between
    NFL’s #bullyculture & #rapeculture.
These types of cultures allowed Penn State
tragedy. My hope is that this type of insidious cultures including players
saying, “…let’s keep these issues ‘in house’ …” will
no longer be tolerated. Jonathan Martin may
be a good choice for NFL Man of the Year.

  11. Incognito has nothing to worry about if he never returns to Dolphins. He’ll be gainfully employed in no time. ESPN has a seat ready for him, right next to Ray Lewis! Everyone deserves a second chance, but not when you “got away with murder.”

  12. typical, bullying by a group ,of some one who has different values. martin went to a private high school , attended stanford. came from an upper middle class family and studied classics. Many Ivy league players put up with some atttacks when go to pros….

  13. Quote from teammate: “We are going to run train on your sister. . . . She loves me. I am going to f–k her without a condom and c– in her c—.”

In my opinion this does not sound like a great teammate that has your back? Even Miggs from Silence of the Lambs would be upset.

It seems that Incognito is not the only one involved.

  14. Well doubt if any team will want Martin on their team, but he can always get a job at Greyhound driving a bus. Seem like he good at that.
