Richard Sherman on challenge of facing Roddy White: “What challenge?”

It’s clear that Atlanta Falcons receiver Roddy White and Seattle Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman don’t think too highly of each other. The two have had an ongoing war of words ever since the playoff matchup between the two teams last January.

White thinks Sherman talks too much and Sherman isn’t particularly impressed with White’s ability as a receiver.

White expects to play this week for the first time in over a month after dealing with injuries to his hamstring and ankle. With White set to return for Atlanta, Sherman was asked if he looks forward to the challenge of facing White again.

“What challenge?” Sherman replied.

White caught five passes for 76 yards and a touchdown in their playoff meeting last year. Sherman swatted away several passes from White but his 47-yard touchdown grab by came with Sherman tripping near the goal line. White said that he doesn’t lose sleep over facing Sherman and, in fact, believes he would be the first guy he’d want to face.

Sherman said he’s not angry over White’s comments but he clearly doesn’t expect White to have any success against Seattle this weekend either.

“It’ll be a fun game for us I can guarantee you that,” Sherman said.

White has played in only five games this season for Atlanta. He’s posted just 14 catches for 129 yards and no touchdowns so far this year. Sherman is tied for the league lead with four interceptions.

  1. Richard Sherman is a great DB, and I love his trash talking, usually I would disagree with what he said though, but he’s right. Roddy has been hurt this year and hasn’t been a challenge for any team.

  2. Good to have a small rivalry brewing between cities 2600 miles away. Should be a closer game than the records might show. Atlanta has had Seattles number lately.

  3. For the last time, the 47 yard touchdown was not Sherman’s coverage. White had 1 catch against Sherman on a come back route.

  4. Calvin Johnson had more receiving yards in one half vs. Dallas than Roddy White’s had all year. Do something on the field before you talk trash.

  5. Only a matter of time until he keeps talking and then gets burned for a touchdown in a game. Hopefully then he’ll hide under his rock and close his mouth

  6. Big Seahawk fan here. Strong out of the gate this year. Last couple of games not so much. Defense been contributing more than offense.

    I like Sherman’s game.

Still…On some level I still have to agree with Roddy White’s assessment: Sherman DOES talk too much. If you are going to play head games, then fine. No matter what you do you do not want to continually provide ammunition to opponents by seeking ways to provoke them. It gets old. Don’t think it has upside in building your brand for endorsements and marketing opps. Sherman should show some respect going in. Being continually arrogant is counterproductive and not entertaining. Not entertaining to me, anyways.

Sherman could learn a little more about reverse-psychology before he again decides to shoot from the hip w/o thinking before speaking.

    Just sayin’.

  7. Sherman wasn’t covering White on that TD catch. The Seahawks were in cover 3. Sherman made a last-ditch effort to make a play because Chancellor blew his assignment in the deep middle.

  8. What challenge, you ask? How about the one where White burned your ass for a touchdown in the playoffs and you were sent packing for the winter.

  9. Haha get’im Sheman! I like a little attitude in a player, especially if he can back it up.

  10. Roddy White is beyond delusional. But then again, he doesn’t have the brain capacity to actually make a sly remark without being ridiculous. Difficult to lose sleep when you’re on your way to 2-7 anyway.

  11. And no, it is no challenge at all for Sherman to lock him down in actual man. I find it hilarious that Sherman haters point to a play where Kam blew his responsibilities over the top as “White burning” Sherman. You’re kidding, right? And the other receptions dinks and dunks for 5, 6 yards? That’s beating him?

  12. Sherman should be the winner this go around. Hawks should win and need to re-establish themselves as not only a tough minded and worthy playoff team, but the team to beat in the NFC. A quality game this week will help do that.

  13. Prspicacious… Sherman isn’t trying to entertain you. Perhaps he is preparing mentally for the game, Sherman’s post game interviews have been pretty respectful. Just saying.

  14. I love people who say some guy talks to much. The only people who say that someone talks to much are people that have shot their mouths off in the pass and were unable to back it up. As an athelete, If you can back it up, TALK AS MUCH AS YOU WANT !!!! THERE’S NOTHING ANYONE CAN SAY OR DO ABOUT IT!!!
Not a Seahawk fan, but I love this guy! back in the day people said Primetime talked to much too….pffffffff

  15. A little football education for the fans drinking Haterade, Richard Sherman for two years has lead the NFL in passes defensed (by a large margin) and in those same two years he has the most interceptions. Hall of Famer Rod Woodson said Sherman is the top CB in the NFL this year.

In that Falcons game it wasn’t even Roddy White who had a big game. It was Julio Jones over Brandon Browner. Richard Sherman actually batted about 3 balls away from White. Who cares any now, one team is 8-1 and another is 2-6 and if Atlanta can’t run the ball they are in for a long night against the number 2 pass defense.

  16. Ya thats exactly what Sherman said last time till Roddy embarrassed him on national television.

Sherman ate dirt when Roddy burned him for a,long touchdown

Like Champ Bailey said, the guys has no respect for the verterans that have been ballin since Sherman was in high school. Eventually the NFL will humble him

  17. Good job buddy…you can almost cover our second reciever. Cover a healthy julio for a game and then see how big your mouth is. Whats going to be better still is how funny its going to be when richard sherman has been in the league as long as roddy has…I doubt he’ll even be able to cover a full back at that point. Richard sherman is a good db now but there are better ones.

  18. “Sherman is tied for the league lead with four interceptions.”

Tied for the league lead with who, you ask??

Earl Thomas also has 4 interceptions at this point (along with 5 other defensive players).

    Seattle’s secondary is awesome!

  19. Am I the only one who’s curious why the “best DB in the NFL” was covering the guy that’s turned into a possession threat over everything instead of covering the guy that is one of the most explosive receivers in the league? Hmmmm…

  20. Correction neither roddy white or Julio did squat that game against Sherman when covering them. As stated many times roddy scored on a slow go in the seam it was Sherman trying to catch up to roddy bc he let him go seeing as he left Sherman’s zone , after he did so he saw that kam bit to hard on another route and tried to catch up and tripped .

The sad and embarrassing thing about this is that RODDY KNOWS THIS bit since he couldn’t even get 20 yards against Sherman he plays this up which really as a competitor is embarrassing .

Combined Roddy and Julio had like 120 and 1 td. The same two had almost 350the next week against SF , the Seahawks shut them down anything other than that is a lie.

Also Sherman said last time Julio is a top 2 wr and roddy is really crafty but not the same caliber as Julio,he pays respect until others say something off the wall like Pierre garçon ,revis ,roddy white .just bc you don’t like the guys style doesn’t give them the right to start throwing shots BC Sherman will come back much harsher as he has in all of those cases.

Funny fact Richard Sherman is getting 1int for every 10 passes thrown his way and that’s not including 2 easy pick drops he had !!

  22. LOL. Listening to a Seahawks fan defend that touchdown White torched Sherman is so funny. You Seahawks fans do nothing but make excuses. Who was Sherman covering then? He was side by side with White the whole play. Was he covering someone else? Nope, he got roped. Quit crying and making excuses. Corners get beat, quit trying to act like Sherman has never given up a touchdown. Its football, no crying… oh wait thats baseball. Okay, its football, no excuses.

I’m not a Seahawks fan, so what’s your rationale?

I know what the play said to me live, I know what the film said. Ryan didn’t throw the ball until Chancellor came down and gave up the top. Sherman was not beaten, nor was he playing press. Sherman slipped, rebounded and Chancellor was out of position in the first place. You people keep reaching hard to find something negative so that you can detract away from Sherman’s resume, but look foolish doing so. What’s your axe to grind?

  24. That moment when you realize one team is 2-6 and done for the season and one team is 8-1 and atop the NFC.

You Falcons fans are hillarious. I get why you clowns are holding onto last year but its hard for any of us to take you seriously when your this terrible and not a threat to anyone. Hope you guys have fun watching the Hawks in the playoffs, guess you can’t choke another playoff game if you can’t even get there, huh?

  25. Falcons fans talking trash as if any Seahawk fan cares. Your team is irrelevant garbage. Congrats on a playoff win, but enjoy it because you won’t get another one for a long time.

As to Sherman, you all would be flipping backwards and high-fiving each other if the Seahawks traded you Sherman for a first round pick. They won’t though because Sherman is a game-changer and you know that. But keep on hatin’, cuz that’s what sucky teams and their fans do.

I know! And then Atlanta went on to thrash San Francisco before winning it all in Super Bowl XLVII…oh wait, uh, I guess they went packing for the winter, too.

  27. To the ATL fan Sherman and browner do not flip sides and it follow relievers , pointing out that he was covering him on that play doesn’t accurately describe the scenario …but nice try

You’re flat out lying. Its okay, its what it is. Seahawks fans feel they need to make endless excuses any time they lose or one of their players gets burnt. Seen the play 7 million times. I could watch it again if I felt the need. Seahawks fans have this knack for being dishonest when they want to stick with their story. Richard Sherman NEVER covered ANYONE ELSE on that play. He was side by side with White the WHOLE PLAY. Stop being a bitter liar. He tripped and fell at the goal line to watch him score. Nothing about anyone else on that play. Sherman got roped one on one. Period. Quit being a liar.

  29. Sherman doesn’t just talk crap. He is usually prodded by questions from reporters and his responses are thusly, blown way out of proportion. Don’t just read what is said, listen to his interviews. They are not egotistical or disrespectful. He talks confidently with humor and intelligence. Those that just say he is always talking crap are just the sheep following the shepard of reporting trying to make something out of nothing. Don’t follow the droves of the uninformed and uneducated. If the 49er fans in here have anything to say, go back and listen to the countless classless, uneducated, egotistical dictating by their very own Terrell Owens
