Nick Foles threw three more touchdowns without an interception in an Eagles win on Sunday and Michael Vick says he won’t be ready to play again for a few weeks, so there doesn’t seem to be much reason to ask questions about the identity of the team’s starting quarterback.
Coach Chip Kelly got those questions on Monday, though, and his answer was pretty much what you’d expect it to be.
“I think what we’ve done for the last two weeks has worked for us pretty good, so we’re going to stick with that formula,” Kelly said, via Reuben Frank of CSNPhilly.com. “It’s got us 16 touchdowns, no interceptions and two wins, so why would we change?”
Kelly later retreated and said he was being sarcastic -- “I thought that would go over big in this crowd” -- because there’s no choice to be made while Vick is injured. The implication is obviously that Kelly is keeping his options open for the long term, but it’s getting increasingly difficult to see the point in the caveats.
Foles is starting in Week 11 and the Eagles don’t play in Week 12, which means it will be December before the Eagles play another game and Vick might not even be ready for that one. Even if he is, Foles has clearly played better this season and has a contract with the organization that runs beyond this season. He’s the starting quarterback, even if Kelly wants to resist the label.
