Mario Williams: Jets disrespectful, not because of Dave & Buster’s

AP

Bills defensive end Mario Williams said after beating the Jets that he thinks his opponents were disrespectful. He did not say he was motivated to beat the Jets because they took a Saturday night trip to Dave & Buster’s in Buffalo.

The New York Post published a column suggesting that the Bills were motivated by the Dave & Buster’s excursion, and that the Jets had provided fuel to the team that defeated them. That column quoted Williams saying, “Me personally, I feel it was disrespectful. I take my nephew to Dave & Buster’s.”

One problem: That’s not what Williams said. What Williams said was that he considers the Jets to be a disrespectful bunch on Sundays, regardless of whatever they do on Saturday night.

“Me personally, I feel like they’re disrespectful in the first place,” Williams actually said, as noted by Deadspin, which posted the audio of Williams’s comments.

Williams did say he takes his nephews to Dave & Buster’s, but that was a separate statement from the opinion that the Jets are disrespectful. In fact, contrary to the New York Post suggestion that the Bills were motivated by the Jets’ Saturday night team-bonding experience, Williams said he found out about it only after the game, when members of the media began pressing the motivational angle when interviewing Bills players in the locker room.

“I didn’t hear about it until just a few minutes ago, actually,” Williams said after the game, in a quote that didn’t make it into the New York Post column.

So, no, Williams did not say he was fired up to beat the Jets because they showed they were taking the Bills lightly with their Saturday night outing, or anything else along those lines. Williams calling the Jets disrespectful makes for a perfectly good post-game quote. There was no reason to turn that quote into something it wasn’t.

  1. They are disrespectful. Look no further than Willie Colon’s comments following the game Sunday. The first time these two teams played I was blown away by the number of penalties committed by the Jets that were rooted in disrespect for the game and their opponents.

Rex Ryan, his players, they all have no respect for 90% of the teams they play. Youd think they were good or something if they were going to be that disrespectful. But they arent.

Also, thanks NY media for spinning this story. Your newspapers are glorified tabloids.

  2. The media, taking separate comments out of context and pasting them together to support a preconceived story line that was sure to get them attention?!

    Shocked, I am.

  3. The Buffalo Bills decisively won this game so good for them. With that said I really don’t see putting too much of the blame on Geno. It was a team loss effort!! There was hardly any O-Line protection for him from a group who soundly handled the Bills D-Line first game. Why the difference I don’t know except Winters was awful. Our run game was non-existant until only Q4 when they dropped everyone back. Our secondary was horrendous which has been our achilles heel all season so congrats to Manuel for his picking them apart. That penalty on Douzable ended up being a momentum killer making the score 10-0 vs a punt to us at 3-0, then Geno’s so called fumble was because his arm was hit as he was throwing which was consistent for the day where he had no time to throw because of the pocket collapsing with crappy protection. Once we got down 17-0 the lack of maturity showed as Geno started to force his throws. I’ll put the loosing his poise & pressing of his throws on him & his lousy reads. He was trying to do too much so I put some of that on the coaches to intervene & help get their rookie’s head straight after the first pick! And why didn’t Morninweg work in so some Geno runs to get him grounded & help his rhythm like in other successful weeks. M’s inconsistent play calling schemes I think is a factor not being discussed in the one week up one week down pattern. I also wonder if there was an injury after that first sack because Geno looked pretty good up until that point & wasn’t the same QB after. So on the Bills side they played lights out And on the jets side I’ll put most of this loss on the O-Line, 2ndary & coaches for their (lack of) protection schemes & personnel choices. Geno is responsible too but he doesn’t deserve the bashing he’s getting from all the ‘bad weather’ media & commenters.

The reason the JetsO-line handled the Bills so well in the first meeting was they weren’t blitzing as much and had 3 backups playing in the secondary. Byrd, and Gilmore made a big difference. Also Dareus was a beast and when he wasn’t in Genos face he was eating up blockers and letting guys on the second level make plays.
I do agree that this wasn’t all the Rookies fault but he’s gotta limit the turnovers.
As for the Jets being disrespectful that’s a trait they get from their coach. Colon said after the game ” We lost to the F— Bills.” He was in disbelief. They thought they could walk in with the same game plan and get a win. The Bills are not a great team but aren’t the easy win on the schedule they have been in years past…. And for the first time in a long time they have a credible coaching staff.

  5. The only winner here is Dave & Busters. That restaurant sure is getting a lot of free press.

  6. The Jets were “Smashed” against the Bills…Dave and Busters is awesome tho…The Jets are the most inconsistent roller coaster team in the NFL…you just don’t know which Jets team will show up on any given Sunday.

  7. jetsjetsjetsnow – Geno hit Byrd in the chest more than any of your receivers. I can’t imagine how you swing that a lot of it wasn’t his fault. He was terrible.

  8. The jests franchise has always been jealous of the winning franchises within the division.

The bills haven’t won a Super Bowl but did go to 4 in a row. That’s something. the jests haven’t sniffed a trip the Super Bowl during recorded memory.

A laughable attempt of a real team.

  9. As a Bills fan I was worried about that Jets defense especially the DLine after the first meeting in game 1…..different Jets team showed up Sunday…. and a more importantly a still young but more mature Bills team showed up too……

  10. Cromartie was yapping the whole game. The Bills players repeatedly told him to take a look at the score board. Good win for the Bills and Manuel. The head coach makes BB look like a jovial man. Smile coach, you just beat a division opponent.

  11. If they had not gone to Dave & Buster’s the whole trip to Buffalo would have been a disappointment for the Jets.

    _____________

Losing four Super Bowls in a row is hardly anything to brag about.

  13. The funny thing is Mario Williams gave the interview over the phone while driving 54 mph in the high speed/passing lane while smoking weed and eating pizza with nate burleson.

  14. @mightysimi

You must not have read the post because I clearly state Geno’s lack of poise & bad reads were on him but he was a rookie under durress having to rush his throws or pick himself up off the turf the whole game. The O-line not picking up blitzes or outright being beaten on the line of scrimmage all day is clearly on their execution or on the protection scheme effectiveness of the coaches. Bills took advantage of some pretty critical mistakes by the Jets early so good for them. Bottom line the team didn’t support their QB enough to enable his success, which resulted in too much pressure on him in an away game having to come from behind. Geno’s definately gotta suck it up & ay better, but essentially other than stopping the run & decent special teams all other aspects of the team didn’t play competitively after the first 5 minutes…

  15. Yeah, how dare those reporters take quotes out of context just to make a story. Who do they think they are, internet hacks?

  16. Forget the fact that the quote was falsified by a writer who should now be fired. How is a team trip to Dave and Buster’s disrespectful to an opposing football team?

Are you seriously hanging your hat on 4 straight super bowl losses? Shall we ignore recent history? Over the last roughly 1.5 DECADES the bills have been one of the most inept franchises, if not the most inept, in the entire NFL. They haven’t made the playoffs EVEN ONCE since 1999, let alone win a playoff game. That is almost 1.5 DECADES!!!!! The Jets have had numerous playoff appearances and playoff wins over that span. Don’t compare the laughing stock of the NFL to a pretty successful team over the last 15 years.

  18. This Bills team is a completely different team than the one the Jets played earlier in the season. Buffalo was missing key players the first time around, like Byrd and Gilmore. The Defense has really improved under Pettine since the year began. The game ball needs to go to him for figuring out a game plan to control the tempo of this game against his former employer. Thanks for the Defensive Coordinator Rex, he is working out quite well.

  19. The NY Post is one of Rupert Murdoch’s holdings, making stuff up is all part of working for News Corp.

As for the Bills, they fully deserved their victory, a great defensive effort, but they’re not exactly choirboys out there. Anybody catch DROY candidate Alonzo trying to roll over a couple times while holding onto Jason Cribbs ankle after he tackled him? Not exactly a ton of sportsmanship involved in that move.

But not one AFC championship. Right the Bills have been bad but to sit and criticize not winning a superbowl in 4 bids well I will just wait until the Jets get to 4. Pretty sure I will be waiting a while.

  21. Geno Smith disrespected the Jets quite a bit. He has them believing that he’s a NFL Quarterback. Obviously a big steaming lie.

  22. Jets fans who are ripping on hehateme for bringing up 2 superbowls in a row need to look in the mirror.

Ole Rexy gained support from you initially and started his Superbowl Guarentee tour based on two straight AFC championship game appearances. This accomplishment is the only reason he was let back this season, the only reason he was ever liked to begin with, and I know i heard (and read on here) Jets fans brag about it. That’s 2 less years of getting one game further from a championship than the Bills.

For the record, neither are necesarily brag worthy, but before you go ripping on hehateme- remember the glass house rule.

  23. HeHateme is not a Bills fan. He roots for anyone who plays the Jets.

    He hates New York.

    Why?

    fresh pizza
    fresh bagels
    museums
    theatre
    and so it goes…

Not a boast. Just a comment that states that they were much better than the jets over their history in only making it once.
All of the other AFC East team have gone to multiple super Bowls… save the jets.

BTW- lrjets. Don’t hate NY. It’s a fun city to visit. I’m referring to the knuckleheads nj fans. Big difference.

  25. Am I the only one confused by this Dave and Busters night before disrespect thing? Who gives a damn if they were having fun the night before at Chucky Cheese? Is it because they’re the Jets and we’re grasping for straws here?

  26. LOL, are Buffalo fans really trying to hold going to four Super Bowls over Jets fans heads? Last time I checked, 1 is better than 0, everybody knows Bills stands for Boy I Love Losing Superbowls. Buffalo played a good game but lord give me a break. Buffalo is one of, if not the most pathetic franchise in the league and losing 4 super bowls in a row only adds to that distinction, not detracts, lmao.

  27. Actually nyjalleffingday:

NYJ all time record: 370-436-8 (0.4545 win %)
    playoff record: 12-13
    playoff appearences: 14
division titles: 4- 2 AFL East, 2 AFC East
    AFL Titles: 1
    Superbowls- 1 win, 1 appearance

Bills all time record: 374-433-8 (0.449 win %)
    playoff record: 14-15
    playoff appearances: 17
division titles: 10- 3 AFL East, 7 AFC East
    AFL Titles: 2
    Superbowls- 4 appearances, 0 wins

On paper, that is about as even as you can get. Id say the Jets Superbowl title evens out the fact the Bills lead all the other post season categories.

Point being, if the Bills are “one of if not the most pathetic franchises” then they are tied for that honor with the Jets. Last 13 years? Yes the Bills are pathetic. All time? Hardly pathetic.

    Typical NY ego. Just stop.

  28. Yeah RationalThinker, that’s the whole point. Look at the **** the Jets catch for being historically underwhelming, and Buffalo is a worse franchise! The Jets franchise is more successful than at least 14 franchises, Buffalos included. The reason people leave Buffalo alone is because Buffalo is irrelevant and people feel bad.

Buffalo isn’t “tied” with the Jets at all, and if you don’t believe me, you can look to the fact that my favorite team is never going to need to move to Canada. If Buffalo fans want to look around the league at their equals, they can look at the Browns and Jaguars and all the other teams that have never won anything. Fact is, for all the trouble the Jets have had being a respectable franchise, the Bills have had it even worse, and now Buffalo fans are gonna act like losing 4 SB’s in a row isn’t part of a long Buffalo history of failure, LOL. You know why Vikings fans don’t brag about going to 4 Super Bowls? Because losing them all is an embarrassment. It’s like Pats fans being proud of a perfect regular season.

Also, I’d like to let you in on a little secret, one which you may not be in on: Buffalo is part of New York!

  29. And the Bills are the only NFL team that actually plays IN New York, unlike the New JERSEY Jets (and Giants).
