The headline says that Browns tight end Jordan Cameron doesn’t blame his recent lack of production on the switch to quarterback Jason Campbell. The content suggests otherwise. Sort of.
The emerging young tight end tried to say the right things regarding the wrong direction in which his numbers are going, given that he has only seven catches for 33 yards in the last two games. But the words chosen by Cameron carry a hint that he’s simply not clicking with the current quarterback.
According to Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer, Cameron acknowledged there are “some chemistry things here and there, but I don’t think that’s a problem at all.”
OK, it’s not a problem. But it was enough to mention.
And it was enough to clarify.
“I don’t think it’s Jason at all,” Cameron said. “They’re jamming you at the line and then there’s someone hitting you at the second level, so it’s just harder chemistry with the route. The timing is a little off.”
That’s fine, but the term “chemistry” rarely gets used in connection with a route. It’s typically used in reference to a person.
And it could be that Cameron simply tried to put the chemicals back in the Erlenmeyer flask.
Officially, Cameron says he’s attracting more attention, now that defenses know who he is and what he can do.
“I’ve just been getting a lot more attention so it’s harder to get open,” Cameron said. “They pay attention to what you’re doing. They’re hitting you in all areas, and I just think it’s the way the defense has been playing. . . . I need to speed things up and I need to find a way to get open.”
Perhaps more accurately, he needs to get open in a way that makes Campbell more comfortable throwing Cameron the ball, like when Campbell found Cameron four times for 81 yards and a 37-yard touchdown against the Chiefs four weeks ago.
